402077 2005-11-05 10:22:00 Is the bog standard answer to burning problems "Use a better quality disk" justified? What is a "Better quality" here in NZ? I understand that even the labelling can be unreliable and whats the use of identifying software if you can't check until you've taken the goods home and unwrapped the package.
This isn't just a rhetorical question so where does one buy the best (in Wellington).

402078 2005-11-05 10:48:00 I go for Sony discs for quality & I go for imation discs for affordability. Mr Wetzyl (362)
402079 2005-11-05 10:52:00 Yep its true.
using a program like Nero InfoTool with a blank medium in the drive shows the brand of medium by the respective maker...

It does pay to go for some well known brands... Sony make their own disks thankfully. TDK use Ricoh to make theirs I think.

Good place to go is forums.afterdawn.com

402080 2005-11-05 17:56:00 Not that I’ve tried “every” brand, but to date, Sony are the only ones that haven’t given me trouble. B.M. (505)
402081 2005-11-05 18:25:00 Ricoh dvd disks have never failed me so far (touch wood).
I've probably used 2~3 hundred.
Currently using "Excel", and none of them have turned into coasters either.

That is a good one...interesting to read views about what discs some of these geeks prefer...

402083 2005-11-05 21:10:00 No more Sony for me!
Don't like their privacy invasion rootkits or their corporate vulture, commercial protection mentality that deems me to be a thief, whether I am or not. AFAIC Sony stinks. :yuck: ROOTKITS!!!!
Might try Ricoh tho' - Thanks for the reminder.
Happy Days to all but Sony.

402085 2005-11-06 02:06:00 I've always liked Kodak branded media. Problem is, theyre nowhere to be found bob_doe_nz (92)
402086 2005-11-06 07:21:00 Thanks for all the responses and posted links. Looks like its very difficult to know what you are getting until you put the disk in your machine and run a check. I've got some Imation DVD-R 8x which turn out to be CMCMAG (real no nos by all accounts) whereas Imation have also used recommended makes like Taiyo Yuden.
Btw does anybody know whether "Made in XXXX" on the packaging refers to the place of manufacture of the disks or to the place where they were packaged?
