402683 2005-11-08 03:57:00 A question about how to go about formating my hard drive.

I currently use Windows XP and the file system is NFTS.

Recently I got a new computer, it has a SATA hard drive. To this system I have added my old IDE drive from my other computer. This old hard drive had been been divided into two seperate partitions which are recognised now it is pluged in. Windows was on one partition and all the other programs on the other, they come up respectively as D and E drive on the new computer.

I have tried to right click and select format but windows will refuse to format either of the drives because there is old user data on there and also other windows related stuff.

Basically I just want to completely whipe all the old data on both drives and have them free for back ups, maybe even have it as one unpartioned drive again.

How can I do this?

Thanks

402684 2005-11-08 04:13:00 So you're using the new PC with the SATA now?

Did you change the SATA to the boot disk in the BIOS?

Are you booting from the SATA?

XP SHOULD format the old hdd, if the SATA has XP or whatever on it .
And has been configured as the bootdisk, in the BIOS .

Go thru control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management . See if the old hdd appears here, and see if u can format the old hdd here .

Did you configure the old hdd in the BIOS as primary master, or slave?

Or Secondary master/slave? And whats the jumper on, on the old hdd? Master, or Slave?

Whats the error saying, when you try and format the old hdd?

402686 2005-11-08 17:08:00 you'll probably have to turn off system restore on the partitions that you want to format before windoze will do it., drcspy (146)
