402454 2005-11-06 19:50:00 I have two laptops networked together - currently I use the one using W2000 as the master and a newer one running XP pro as a back up - up until yesterday I could set up a new Network place on the the W2000 no prob (ie look at a folder on the new one) now all I get is that pc is not accessible Access Denied. The strange thng is I can still access all my network place set up previously. I have adminstrator rights on both pcs use the same identity etc. Any quick fix ideas appreciated. brum (7388)
402455 2005-11-06 20:07:00 The quickest fix is usually to have a quick look at the firewall settings. FoxyMX (5)
402456 2005-11-06 21:16:00 Thanks FoxyMX, haven't changed anything on Zone Alarm for ages, checked it anyway and all the local network. subnet all look ok, still getting access denied. Can't understand how I can look at the contents of a folder on the other pc, even transfer data to i,t but it won't let me see it or browse for the whole pc when I look using pcs near me. brum (7388)
402457 2005-11-07 01:31:00 This problem seems to happen fairly freqently. It just happened to my network after installing System Mechanic 6 Upgrade, and it said I had lots of vulnerabilities which it "fixed". Maybe that was the cause, I don't know.

Trying to access my main XP computor via "Entire Network" I had the Access denied message, though I could get in to the folders showing after clicking on My Network Places

Having spent 3 days trying to resolve the problem, and tearing my hair out, this is what fixed my network:

In XP, go to Administrative Tools from Control Panel. Then Local Security Policy-Security Settings-Local Policies-Security Options.

Scroll down to the 2 similar entries, Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts...
Double click on each of them in turn and set to disabled.

This fixed the problem in XP, but I don't know about Win2000.

I also found this network troubleshooting site that may help, though it didn't directly for me:

402458 2005-11-07 07:59:00 Thank you so much Terry, worked perfectly, you may have torn your hair for 3 days but that enabled you to help me in less than 3 minutes, much appreciated. brum (7388)
402459 2005-11-07 08:53:00 Good-o, glad to help a fellow brummie?

Incidently I use IPX/SPX for network connectivity, and only bind File and Printer Sharing to the IPX/SPX protocoll, no binding to TCP/IP protocoll. This is supposed to give better security.

No, it is available in Win XP as a protocoll to install. NetBEUI though, has to have 2 files installed from the Valueadd\MSFT\NetBEUI folder on the XP CD.
If you have a network with computers going through a switch to a router/modem, or to a router modem with a number of ports, as in that trouble shooting site I referenced above, then a lot of file/printer sharing problems can sometimes be solved by using IPX/SPX or NetBEUI for the LAN instead of TCP/IP, and then for security remove the bindings for file and printer sharing from TCP/IP and also Client for Microsoft Networks from TCP/IP.

This is especially true for computers having different Windows OSs which can be difficult at times to get to share using TCP/IP.

Except for the recent problem above, I have WFWG 3.11 ( :) ), Windows 95B, Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Pro on a LAN and they file share with no problems using IPX/SPX
