402308 2005-11-06 05:06:00 I been talking to a mate of mine who has just had her house burgled.

Luckily not much was taken apart from her HP laptop.

The thieves made away with all the accessories apart from the install cd's which were safely tucked away in an old shoe box.

Is there anyway to be able to track down the lappie if connected to the Internet? I'm thinking probably not but if anyone knows if it can be done please post your ideas.

Mods

If this is in the wrong forum please move accordingly...thanks

402309 2005-11-06 05:21:00 Not unless it has some sort of tracking software on it, probably been reformatted by now.
You could contact MS and see if they will block/lock the serial key that is stuck to the lappie, if your friend has a copy

402310 2005-11-06 05:25:00 The laptop would already be reformatted by now, so they wouldn't be using her old connection settings to her ISP.

I think I read a while ago about some sort of hardware tracking device that can be put inside laptops, which is not affected by reformats but will call home if that laptop is connected to the internet (home being the tracking website). I can't remember any further details but someone else may be able to.

Bit late for your friend now though.

402313 2005-11-06 08:55:00 I think the software was called pc phone home from memory and it could survive a reformat and called home when ever connected to the net so an IP trace could be done.

To bad if it's not installed or a name hasn't been engraved into the case.
If you lost data then it should have been backed up and stored separately.
Tough lessons but it's a big world out there. :2cents:

Although I would extremely highly doubt it would turn up on there.

402315 2005-11-06 12:12:00 Scan the classifieds in the major papers and the Trade&Exchange, and TradeMe, for that same make & model. Thieves usually steal to sell it, so you may get lucky. Maybe even put up an ad requesting that self same make & model or nearby specs, and offer some high-ish price for it. What the hell, you might get the idiots offering to you for sale. vinref (6194)
402316 2005-11-07 02:10:00 Advise HP. They might have a register of stolen laptops, so if it comes in for service or password resetting, they can do the appropriate. If they haven't, suggest that they start one ... ;) Graham L (2)
