402487 2005-11-07 03:15:00 Hey surfer Joe

might be an idea if you let us know what the specs of your machine are as some of the prettier distros run like treacle on slower machines with not enough ram

The machine I'm gonna try it on is Soyo Dragon SY-333 Ultra Platinum, AMD Athlon XP, 1.3gHz, 1 gig RAM, 2-200gig Maxtor, NVIDIA GeForce MX440 AGPEX.

Will that work OK? :groan:

I have larger and faster machines..and a few Dell Beige 500 and 450's with 512.

402489 2005-11-07 03:34:00 Slax Linux? bob_doe_nz (92)
402490 2005-11-07 03:39:00 I'd definatly recomend Mepis

Run live CD
Play
If you like it, then you'll find a facility to install it on your desktop. Its very point and click, yet also very logical.

This is coming from someone who has put windows in the "too hard" basket.

Knoppix is another one with a live CD, Lets you discover any issues in advance of commitment.

402493 2005-11-07 07:25:00 SuSe is nice and I have found YaST rather friendly (don't know what it stands for though  )

I run Mandrake Linux and find it pretty good. Also also have been known to run Slackware...

402494 2005-11-07 07:49:00 NVIDIA GeForce MX440 AGPEX .
In some Linux distro, some graphics cards are not recognised by them . For example, on my machine, neither Knoppix or Morphix recognise the Intel Integrated Graphics Controller .

Cheers :)

402495 2005-11-07 08:26:00 Surfer Joe 46,
You sound like you could handle Gentoo and have a ball doing it. I did and I would say my previous experience with computing would be far, far less than yours.
Others might say start with something easier and fair enough they might be right, but I would say with your background in programming you are equipped to have the right mind set.
The documentation is really excellent and people on this forum gave me a lot of support - no flames here. I've found the Gentoo online forum helpful too and they don't appear to have a attitude of flaming (maybe their moderators are good also, maybe I've just got a thick hide).
I did try Libranet before becoming hooked on Gentoo - it was quite good, based on Debian, easy to install; but since the untimely death of its founder Jon Danzig, I don't know where its at anymore. Also at one stage when I couldn't make much sense of the finishing stages of Gentoo, I gave up and installed Debian Sarge and that went remarkably well. I found apt-get not as good as Gentoo's Portage however. And anyway Chill, Jen, Tazz & others rallied to my assistance and I got a good Gentoo installation up & running.
I wouldn't want to confuse the issue, I see you are getting lots of advice here, but if you get a moment have a look at the Gentoo site.
