402445 2005-11-06 08:48:00 Hi all, any help on this one. Running Windows ME, & when I open local disk (C:) I can always find a heap of files named something like this but they could be 20 or more symbols long, (I could not find the exact symbols but you get the idea) if I click on properties, the type is " file " size " 0 " size on disk "0 " any ideas where they come from & is it safe do delete them. Cheers.

402446 2005-11-06 09:42:00 Bit of a strange one. What was the last modified or created date on the files? Are they all the same? Do the files appear to change?

I take it you have checked your system out for viruses or other malware using reputable programs? You haven't noticed any other change in behaviour with the computer?

402447 2005-11-07 00:46:00 When I find 'starnge files' like this I check out, as Jen suggested, when they were created and if recent (ie not a fundamental system file) then I move them to the Recycle bin and leave them there for a few few cold boots and if all seems to run well they go out with CCleaner next time I run it. I alaso note where they are on the HD, like if in Temp then it's more likely they can be removed than if under system32 for example. (Though I know you can get malware there too.)

HTH

402448 2005-11-07 01:19:00 I would delete them off the system completely the second I noticed em. Metla (12)
402449 2005-11-07 02:06:00 They are not files, and never were. They are bad directory entries. Somehow, the directory has been corrupted. Scandisk should fix it (unless it indicates a bad area on the disk :().

Delete them if you can, (you might not be able to if there are illegal characters in the entries). But anyway, use scandisk (a thorough scan) because the disk has been corrupted.

402451 2005-11-10 09:10:00 Oooh, with my experience of Windows Me, deleting everything (including Windows Me itself) would be an even better fix. More bug-prone than a baby at a creche. :badpc: nicisace (7454)
402452 2005-11-10 10:02:00 I don't think you reply is of help to the original poster.
I have used Win ME for 4 years with no major problems although I have not tried to make it bigger.faster or better.
Maybe I have been lucky & you weren't.
From what I have noticed is that most OS's have their glitches.

402453 2005-11-10 10:10:00 Hi Jebby,
Are these in the Window folder?
I have lots of them too with tmp at the end.
I might try what marc c suggested.
Some appear to be recent creations & some not so recent. Computer is running fine otherwise.
Pauline.
