402220 2005-11-06 02:54:00 I know there are 3 kinds of USB, 1.0 and 1.1 and the new faster 2.0, i only know that each one is faster than the other, but I dont understand does it really matter? as i'm keen in getting a few things but most have 2.0 capability, and mines not, its 1.1....can things with 2.0 capability go backwards and be able to work on 1.1 even if transfer speeds is slower..
I know somethings wont work as good as they would on 2.0 but at the moment the main things I'm looking at getting is a ipod, and also a small data storage keydrive for my stuff on it...

Can someone explain please, I've looked on a few websites and am not having much luck

402221 2005-11-06 03:06:00 USB 1.1 speed is 11/12 mbps, compared to 480 mbps for USB 2.

ie: If you plug an external cd/dvd burner which is USB 2, it'll be slow as, and will most probably make coasters / errors.

USB 2 is backwards compatible with 1.1 but you'll notice the diff, if u plug a USB 2 device into a USB 1.1 port. Depending on what it is.

402222 2005-11-06 03:12:00 Cool, its only the ipod and the portable usb drive, 256mb etc etc...so it'd surely be ok wont it? wont affect playback or saving files? I wouldnt get stuff like cd burners externally for usb, dont need to anyway lol csinclair83 (200)
402223 2005-11-06 03:20:00 Hmm it should be OK with the Ipod .

Dunno if it'll take twice as long to recharge the Ipod, since the Ipod can charge while connected to the USB port . (some models do, dunno if yours will) .

It may take longer for playback or saving files too . Since, it'll be connected to a USB 1 . 1 port . I would get a PCI USB 2 card . . . .

And XP, if this is what you use will most probably complain and say something like you're trying to run a USB 2 device, on a 1 . 1 port .

If you do decide to get a USB 2 card, SP1 or 2 needs to be installed .

402224 2005-11-06 03:26:00 Its a Ipod shuffle we're looking at getting, and we dont mind if it takes twice as long as it'd be charging all night, and i just readed on dse.co.nz it supports 1.1 too, so it would work but slower transfer rates?

I use a laptop, so expansion isnt quite possible and since my modem died after warranty expired, i use the PCMCIA slot for modem...so i think i'm a bit limited in expansion at the moment, unless you have some ideas lol.

Already got SP1/2 installed...gotta keep those buggers out one way or another lol

?
The power output of USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports are the same, (500 mA at 5v) but some laptops are not always capable of the full 500 mA per port (to preserve battery life I suppose) but it's in no way related to the speed of the USB port.

402226 2005-11-06 03:41:00 You can use a pcmcia USB 2.0 card and get 2.0 functionality on most devices. Devices like a USB TV may not function properly as they prefer the embedded USB type due to the requirements of the Graphics. You can with that interchange with one of your other pcmcia cards assuming all of them would not be required at the same time. Trevors (6763)
402227 2005-11-06 06:55:00 Just to clarify on what speedy said:
USB 1.0 = 1,200kbps
USB 1.1 = 12mbps
USB 2.0 = 480Mbps

You _can_ successfully burn a DVD, and use a thumbdrive fine with USB 1.0 and 1.1 hubs. Admittedly the DVD would only burn at 1x on USB 1.0 (1x DVD Burn = just higher than 1,200kbps IIRC) and so you would need buffer underrun protection enabled. It _WILL_ work however :) I know, I have done it myself on more than one occasion. Of course the power would need to come from an external source, but I dont know of a 5 1/4" external casing which doesnt provide that functionality.

402228 2005-11-06 08:22:00 Just to clarify on what speedy said:
USB 1.0 = 1,200kbps
USB 1.1 = 12mbps
USB 2.0 = 480Mbps

USB 1.0 and USB 1.1 are both 12Mbps (or 1.5 Mbps subchannel for slowspeed devices). The differences between 1.0 and 1.1 are essentially a tidyup in the specification.
