402242 2005-11-06 00:33:00 Nearly 2 years ago I had a crash which was fixed when it was found that the DDR ram slots were faulty. The SD ram slots were OK and I had 512Mb of SD type ram fitted. This has worked OK since then.

I am now in a position to have an upgrade and need advice as follows :

I would like to replace my AMD Athlon 1700 Cpu. Assuming that my gear is a 4 year old PC Company set, what size Cpu could I go to without creating heat problems etc.....I have 2 fans. Also what is the relevance of the socket...e.g. 1.8Ghz Socket 754 or 939.

Having decided that, what would be a suitable motherboard to go with the upgraded Cpu and restoring me with some decent ram ?

I have looked at available stock in PriceSpy but without trade knowledge don't know what would be suitable.

The present set-up has worked well for most work except it is borderline for running my 7 Gig of Flightsim stuff, hence the upgrade.

At the same time I will replace my old 64Mb GeForce video card. What would be suitable but reasonable and best to go with the suggested upgrades.

All advice genuinely appreciated.

402243 2005-11-06 01:19:00 Your after a Socket A cpu .

Biff the PC Compnay case, they are poor for airflow no matter how many fans you use, the PSU tends to be mounted over the CPU .

Personally I would suggest you but a new mobo, cpu, case and video card . . . . . .

402244 2005-11-06 01:24:00 In all honesty your are better off looking to go AMD64 . Replacing with a higher Athlon is probably a waste of time and money for the benefit you will get, and your board may not support the Barton+ core's Athlons anyway .

Save up and bite the bullet, replace your motherboard, ram and CPU and Vid card if you go PCIE . Go AMD64 or dual core they run cooler and kick the Athlons ass .

Socket 754 or 939...motherboards...939 is the best one for the X2 dual core Athlon 64 processor.

402247 2005-11-06 07:24:00 I thought they were retiring the 754's soon? bob_doe_nz (92)
402248 2005-11-06 07:48:00 I am going to upgrade soon as well and i was looking at the DFI LanParty series motherboards . they are cheap, competitve and loaded with extras .

What you are looking for depends on what you are going to use your computer for, there is no point having a powerhouse when all you do is surf the net, there is point if you are going to use it for gaming and such . ;)

You don't mention how much you have to spend so it's hard to offer meaningful advice .
You are not going to be able to do anything worthwhile with your present computer without spending at least a $1000 . For $2000 you could buy a new computer . Something like an Athlon 64 3000+

If you do upgrade then get a new 939 m/b . Don't get a 754 . You will be unable to do much in the way of upgrading in the future .
To run your flight sim program properly you will want at least a 3000+ cpu . and a gig of 400 ram . And the best video card you can afford .

You will be pleasantly surprised how much better your sim will run on a good computer . Particularly if a lot of your 7 gig is addon scenery .

At present I have 11 . 5 gig in my flight sim patition . And I'm still adding bits to my computer to make it "perfect" .
