402705 2005-11-08 08:27:00 I have a 40gb hard drive with Windiws XP installed in a FAT32 partition. It was working OK when pulled from a working PC, but when put in an external USB enclosure Windows asks to format it. When put back in the PC it won't boot any more. Partition Magic reports that it has data, but I can't acces it at all. There was no unusual security on this drive. Standing_Amazed (7841)
402706 2005-11-08 19:34:00 Are you wanting to use it as just a data drive? In which case I'd let WIndows format it again.

You did have it set as Master before you put it in the enclosure? It should be...

Yes I want to use it as a data drive, but I want the files off it first. It is set to master.

Hook it up to the PC via IDE as the slave drive and get your files off. Then put it back in the enclosure.

Tried that. Windows still thinks it's unformatted. I can only see that it's not empty from Partition Magic, but I can't access the files.

402710 2005-11-09 21:03:00 You have munted the File allocation table, The FAT in other words, Your best chance of recovering any Data is to find an app that does a RAW recovery, though any fragmented files will be lost.

No idea why Im telling you this though, Seeing as your much wiser in the ways of computers then I will ever be, I think it was ignorant you called me wasn't it?

Thanks for the suggestion. However I stand amazed that you harbour a grudge over something so petty. However I still think you are ignorant of Macs, and if you're honest with yourself you'd agree.

You have a lot of knowledge of PCs . Without that knowledge people would put up with your crap on this forum . A wise man once said "if you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all" .

It's not a battle, you know, you don't have to be King Prat - it actually detracts from your real gifts .

Have a great day, Champ!
