403408 2005-11-10 20:16:00 hhmmm......Thats the same package I installed, And it didn't show up in VirtualDub...

Thats a bit of a mystery, Something I will have to look into tonight.

No use dismissing these things as rubbish if its user error.....

403409 2005-11-10 21:29:00 Not worth the effort, If your going to encode into H.264 then you might as well get Quicktime pro 7, Though the only reason this has it is because its the codec that the video ipod uses,
I use QT7 Pro to encoded H.264. I'm sure as the standard becomes more common there will be more options that are just as easy to use as well. As I said, it is a standard to consider. If you computer is too old to play it (or encode it) or you think the people who are going to want to play it will have difficulty then obviously it isn't the best choice. Also, H.264 is also good for video conferencing because it doesn't take up as much bandwidth and as well all know our connections in New Zealand are pretty slow so it is a great way to increase quality and lower transfer costs.

Quicktime pro is getting murdered as far as feedback goes....Most of it seems to be in terms of having to pay for it though. I agree with many of the posters. It should be included with Mac OS X rather than expecting an extra $30 each time a new version comes out. As for Windows users, I think it would benefit them to offer it free but I can understand the reluctance to give it away. I suppose $30 dollars isn't too bad though considering all the things it can do.

once again at doom9..some direct links about h264Those links are great. Thanks heni72847. :)

403410 2005-11-10 21:53:00 hmmmm...I personally consider $30 dirt cheap for an encoder, The feedback I read on the 7 pages of feedback at the Apple store covered a lot of areas, Namely loss of sound, non-functioning programs, and forcing Itunes, lack of performance, and lack of support and feedback from Apple.

Such feedback has to be tempered with the fact that its generally only those with issues that place feedback, Im sure there have been a few million people download it....

I guess I'm guilty of not reading past the first page. :p

I agree. It really isn't that expensive if you are going to use it all the time but for someone who has just paid $300 for the latest version of Mac OS X and they only want to connect a few family video clips off their digital camera and export them it could be seen as an unnecessary cost (though they could use other software). While that may not be the case, it is perceived that way by many people who don't know about the details and just want to convert a video.

Anyway, this thread seems to have good a bit off topic. Back to MPEG4 (DVD), AVI, DivX, Xvid and H.264.
