403195 2005-11-12 05:49:00 Just as long as Norton's doesnt include the firewall .

It looks like you only have the AV installed .

I would go to c: \ windows \ prefetch . Delete whats there too .

It'll fill up again . And uninstall Windows Messenger, if its the original version .

It has a habit of spamming crap .

. dougknox . com/xp/utils/MessengerDisable . zip" target="_blank">www . dougknox . com

msmsgs . exe I think belongs to Windows messenger, not MSN messenger .

I'll have a look, and see if I can see what that error actually means .

403196 2005-11-13 00:32:00 Re Firewall, only use Zone Alarm, Norton is AV only, Windows firewall shutdown

Re KMaestro this is for PC Company multimedia keyboard

Will clear prefetch

msmsgs.exe is Windows Messenger
In IE / Tools / there is a button for Windows Messenger.
Booted up and run only Hijackthis, Messenger was running in spite of msconfig/Services and Messenger Options of do not run.
Messenger is v4.7.3001 and contains security software.
Wary of removing Messenger in case it is used by another Windows programme

403197 2005-11-13 00:54:00 Windows messenger, isnt used by anything else .

Besides being a PITA, when u run OE .

I usually remove it when and if I format . BUT it's up to you . .

It does exactly the same as MSN Messenger (If u use hotmail, and for chatting with) .

The only thing it is used for, is remote desktop . BUT this doesnt have to be installed to use remote desktop . There are either freeware programs, that can do this .

Or you can use Remote desktop connection in the communications menu (If u use XP Pro) .

403198 2005-11-13 03:08:00 Thanks Speedy, have removed Messenger using

process.networktechs.com

Hijackthis now shows no 09 entries plus Messenger not running.

msconfig still only accessible from Service, so will live with it and classify it as a B.I.I.K. situation that Windows seems fond of creating.

403199 2005-11-13 03:39:00 It looks like Zonealarm, and maybe Nortons can cause that access is denied error .

Go offline for now, and disable both for now .

And then see if you can get into msconfig .

If this doesnt work, enable both again .

You're not logged in as a limited user are you?

403200 2005-11-13 06:00:00 Went off line, disabled Zone Alarm and Nortons, could'nt get into msconfig from Run. Also tried with FreeMem disabled, still no joy. Re enabled all.

Re limited account there are 2 accounts, both are Administrator with the Guest account turned off

Re prefetch for anybody cleaning out the Prefetch Files do NOT remove or delete layout.ini or you may end up with no working Prefetch Folder.

403201 2006-12-03 11:18:00 I am also facing this problem.

I am the adminstrator of my PC. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with all the latest updates.

I am able to run all the windows programs & services.

When I try to apply the changes I've made in msconfig.exe, I get the same error. The changes actually happen inspite of giving me the error.

I have been using Zonealarm Pro for past 5-6 years and never faced any problem. The problem started about 1-2 days ago.

I have scanned my computer with Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Doctor, Pc-cillin, Zonealarm Anti-spyware using latest definitions. But found nothing. I checked my system for any other problem such as this and found none. Have already tried replacing the current msconfig.exe with one from ServicePackFiles but of no use.

Have already tried all soultions already posted here but of no use.

I'm keeping reinstallation a last resort.

Plz somebody help me/us all.

403203 2006-12-03 21:38:00 Still in same B.I.I.K situation. Beside the Service file you can use the Command Prompt as follows

Accessories | Command Prompt | type in CD\ | press Enter | result C:\ | type in cd\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe | press enter | MS Config utility window

The following maybe of some help

403204 2007-01-21 21:30:00 I think I've found another cause for the access denied error in msconfig besides Zone Alarm.
I have just completed a full system re-install. After this I went to install MaCafee which I have a subscription to. I then went to remove a startup item and got the access denied error. I then removed MaCafee and restarted the computer and it didn't give the access denied error anymore. I'm going to
re-installl MaCafee and adjust some of the settings to see if I can get rid of
the access denied error.
