Though not as intitive as some payware programs, but then Ive seen some real dogs being sold commercially. as to H.264, is their a cost?, Im always interested in new codecs, But that has to be tempered with who you may destribute your finished project to and what codecs they may have, Imo its best to play it safe and use the more commen codecs in some cases, even though they may not be the latest and greatest. |

2005-11-10 08:25:00 | Righto, As far as I can see H.264 is a high end commercial codec, Recomending that for a home project borders on rampent stupidity. | Metla (12) | |
2005-11-10 10:07:00 | I wouldn't say commercial as such considering you can encode it fine on a home computer. It is really just an evolution of H.263. The only reason I would recommend being cautious of using it is if the computers you want to play it on are more than two years old because old hardware isn't really powerful enough to play content in H.264. Other than that it should definitely be a consideration when selecting a codec as it provides an exception picture (of course this is limited by the content you have in the first place) and takes up less space than many alternatives. :) | maccrazy (6741) | |

2005-11-10 10:18:00 | Cant find a real lot of info on H.264, Have you actually used it?, and if so does it work when just encoding an AVI or is it locked into authoring a DVD? | Metla (12) | |
2005-11-10 10:31:00 | once again at doom9..some direct links about h264 info on h.264 (forum.doom9.org) the codecs (forum.doom9.org) can be used at home..don't see why not.. only that some people..or most people wouldn't know how to play it psp use it.. and um.. yea..there's a open source encoder too i've seen video distrobuted with h264 encoding around the net something worth looking into.. should be future proof but if you want any comp noob to play the file..stick with some more well known/mature ones

2005-11-10 11:02:00 | Righty-ho campers. Managed to aquire an AVI sample encoded into H.264, Installed the x286 codec and the file refused to run, after a bit of looking around I was pointed towards this... www.free-codecs.com ...Which enabled playback  My now try and see if I encode some video footage and see if its faster then realtime......

2005-11-10 11:31:00 | Hmmm. X264 isn't a codec (doh!) as far as I can see (granted I presumed too much), its an encoder that requires the video files are streamed to it by AviSynth, which works via a scripting arengment. Too much effort, Maybe I should just grab Quicktime Pro which has native suport......

2005-11-10 13:10:00 | Ugh. Gone Gone and Gone. Not worth the effort, If your going to encode into H.264 then you might as well get Quicktime pro 7, Though the only reason this has it is because its the codec that the video ipod uses, I looked at the apple store and Quicktime pro is getting murdered as far as feedback goes.... Plenty of excellent codecs available, No need for this sort of carry on, Even if you buy the required programs the codec doesn't show up alongside the installed codecs so your forced to use the parent app.....

2005-11-10 18:37:00 | um.. i installed x264 (x264.nl/) and was able to use that in virtualdub and encode video in the same way as if i was doing xvid encoding is no where near real time..not on my comp anywayz but i don't mind taking a while to encode and get good result which you keep maybe a good idea to leave h264 for now..and go back to it later when more developed if it seems all bad right now..
