403212 2005-11-10 02:23:00 I'm going home to my parents for the holidays :) But unfortunately I have a small problem with emailing. I will use my laptop to use their Xtra dial-up account while I am up there, but have had issues with this in the past with regards to sending emails. I was wondering if there is any way to configure Thunderbird to send my @orcon.net.nz account emails using the Xtra dial-up? I can just use the webmail but it's a lot easier to use Thunderbird if this is possible.
Cheers,
roddy

403213 2005-11-10 02:51:00 You should be able to send if you change your settings to use the xtra smtp server but I don't know if Orcon will let you access their POP accounts from an Xtra dial-up. PaulD (232)
403214 2005-11-10 03:05:00 They let me recieve emails, but not send them, last time I tried. So I would leave my pop3 as pop3.orcon.net.nz, but change smtp to smtp.xtra.co.nz? And it should work?
Thanks for that,
roddy

That is true, however if you read the post again you will see that is not what they are doing.

403218 2005-11-10 05:40:00 Awesome thanks for that everyone, I will just change smtp.orcon.net.nz to smtp.xtra.co.nz, and all should be well.
Thanks heaps for the help!

403219 2005-11-11 11:40:00 In your outgoing server settings in Thunderbird, you can add multiple SMTP clients, your POP3 client remains the same no matter which ISP you're connecting too, you may need to set authentification though, however the sending of emails over another ISP, requires the ISP's SMTP due to the fact that they don't allow relaying to another SMTP server (some ISPs do, but this is a big security flaw which allows anyone to maliciously spam from that server).

Just look in the Advance TAB in your outgoing server settings, you can read the warning, and think that it won't work, but I do believe this warning is quite scary even though this method is simple. Once added, when on the Xtra ISP, just change your default to Xtra's SMTP, when back on your Orcon, switch it back. I have had no problems with multiple SMTP settings and I have over 5 due to the amount of travel I do and different ISP's I've connected to in the past.

Cheers,

403220 2005-11-11 15:24:00 Kame: thanks for that, however do I need to enter a user name and password for the xtra smtp? I recall having great difficulty when setting up my orcon account and it refused to send emails for a long time until I figured it out. I know to say no to SSL or whatever it is, but do i check or uncheck the box for username/password. And if i check it, do I just use my Orcon username?

Cheers for teh help all, you aren't shizno's for sure.
