1393768 2015-02-08 00:14:00 I am hunting for Win 7 drivers for an enclosure I use for backups which, oddly enough, uses HP USB-CD writer drivers. I cannot find anything on the HP website because the enclosure is not an HP product. I have been using the enclosure for a few years with Win XP and it performs well. The manufacturer seems to have vanished without trace. A web search suggests updated drivers are available from driversguru.com, but the links given all lead to a download page for something called DriverTuner from LionSea Software. According to the LionSea page DriverTuner is an antivirus and anti-everything-malware product. LionSea is apparently linked to Driversguru. It all looks rather dodgy. I went directly to the Driversguru website and did a search for the drivers I am seeking and they have a download link for them. However I don't wish to proceed without establishing that Driversguru is a safe and reliable site. Can anyone help?

TIA

Whats the name of the enclosure? If you plug it in go to device manager, look for its entry. Go to the details tab change it to hardware ids. Copy and paste whats there in here

That site often suggests drivers that are fake, or you install the programs and then they want $$ :yuck:

Generally you don't need any special drivers as W7 will install automatically or download them from windows update when prompted.

There are drivers for HP CD-Writer 8200 BUT they are only for XP and earlier, which means W7 onwards will pick them up as long as they are compatible.

1393771 2015-02-08 07:15:00 Yep, those sites are dodgy and always pop up in the searches when looking for older drivers from companies who are long gone, and current ones.
I had a unidentified Toshiba laptop (label with model, etc was well worn) that needed Win7 reloaded and for the hell of it I tried Iobit Driver Booster pro from some giveaway, and it nailed it- got all unidentified drivers. Saved me a lot of time and aggro. I'm highly sceptical of this type of software, but in this case it saved my bacon.

The device is reported in Win 7 in various places as a USB ATAPI connector. The Win 7 machine I am trying to use this enclosure with is a new Asus laptop. This device has a quirk, reported several times on the net, whereby the 2x USB 3.0 ports respond differently to some devices, especially printers, from the single USB 2.0 port. I haven't resolved this yet but I have struck it here with a printer which is reported by the USB 3.0 ports as an unknown device but is recognised correctly by the USB 2.0 port. I am using a workaround in the meantime. In the case of the enclosure, when connected to the USB 2.0 port of the laptop it appears as an unknown device in Printers and Devices. In the status line of that page it is reported as a USB ATAPI connector, Category unknown. A manual check for updates at this point reports 'no important updates available'. When the device is connected to a USB 3.0 port it is found by Windows which then attempts to install drivers but eventually reports 'USB ATAPI connector - no driver found'. A manual check for updates again produces nothing. I have copied the folder of drivers from an XP machine (on which the enclosure runs perfectly) to the laptop and tried directing Windows to this during a manual "Install a new device" but get 'no drivers found'.

The XP driver fileset -
euiosmsd.inf
euiosmsd.pdr
eusbmsd.sys
hpiosata.inf
hpiosata.pdr
hpuata.inf
hpuata.sys
scmhpuata.inf
slusbhlp.vxd

Does any of this provide any clues?

1393773 2015-02-09 18:09:00 If those XP drivers work, add it through device manager under the missing entry (update driver). Point it to the inf file. If they work in Win7, it'll load the drivers. After you select the inf file / browse my computer / let me pick / have disk option Speedy Gonzales (78)
1393774 2015-02-09 19:00:00 I think the drivers maybe here somewhere (http://www.identiv.com/) for Win7. If those XP drivers dont work

You may have to contact them and find out which ones

It maybe one of these (support.identive-group.com)

Thanks Speedy, tried that but it reports that " the specified folder does not contain a compatible software driver for your device", then adds to make sure that [the driver] is designed to work with 64-bit systems, which the laptop is but the XP machine (where the drivers worked) probably wasn't.

I have looked at the links in your 2nd post of today and will try to contact Identive. The pages in your 2nd link are all Greek to me (hope you're not Greek!) and don't have any references to ATAPI. In any case they all appear to relate to their own products.

1393776 2015-02-11 09:14:00 This enclosure does it connect to power?? Or can it connect to power?

Sometimes USB devices wont install drivers (if they're not powered). I have come across this prob with USB headphones.

The port didn't supply enough power, the driver kind of installed. But showed an error under the entry in device manager.

It wasn't until the person connected a powered USB hub then plugged the headphones into it, that the drivers installed. And the headphones worked

1393777 2015-02-11 11:42:00 Speedy - yes it is self-powered. It has to be powered on to be detected by Windows. As you know some devices must be switched off during the first stage of driver installation but AFAIK these cases involve installation from executable files and the XP driver files for my device are all .inf which presumably requires that the device must be detected by Windows first.
