2014-08-04 00:45:00 | Hi there I'm thinking about changing from prepay 2degrees to vodafone or skinny (my ph is a newish 4G Samsung) Voda & Skinny have good $19/$16 prepay months deals, with 500M & approx 90minutes . Any advantage of one over the other ? $3 price difference is no big deal (Vod offer free 1st month if switching carrier) Would skinny have better coverage, is skinny using all of Telecoms towers ? Do either ream you if you go over the data cap without realising ? Cheers

2014-08-04 01:02:00 | Skinny offers the same, 1 month free if switching carier. I'd run with Vodafone - I believe they offer 4G as part of their $19 a month plan, Skinny doesn't.

2014-08-04 01:20:00 | 2 D has same package for 19 and unused data rolls over. If your phone isn't unlocked you are stuck with voda or 2D I found 2D coverage to get a bit iffy on the fringes of Ak (ie no coverage) Are you sure 2D data rolls over , they dont say that (cant see it) www.2degreesmobile.co.nz I'm with 2D at the mo, one issue I had is that if you go over data use they charge you at 50c per meg. Thats a bit of an issue if you dont know youve used all the data. What happens with all these carriers if you run out of call minutes on $19/$16 prepay packs? does the ph simply stop calls (2D does), do Vod skinny stop call or do they just auto charge you at std rates ? My ph is not locked, so no issues there.

2014-08-04 01:24:00 | Skinny does support 4G, the site doesnt mention 4g/3g on the combo product page though..... Skinny has rollover minutes, that would be nice. www.skinny.co.nz

I have never run out of anything so don't know about charges for that. I find 2D coverage here in Christchurch fine and I did in Nelson while living there too, but then again I'm never likely to go to Telecom as they were the ones who would not let Vodafone users send text to Telecom phones when I first came here. |

2014-08-04 22:04:00 | I just ported a number to Skinny last week . One thing you can do with them is generate a GST receipt on prepay plus they have roll over minutes and free AU calls and SMS which I believe voda doesn't do.. | paulw (1826) | |
2014-08-06 08:35:00 | IMO - if one is working fine for you there is not really any point. Sure $3/mo is $36 PA. Depends if you don't use much data and then it adds up by carryover with 2D (maybe others dunno who else does that), Skinny doesn't do carryover data only mins. Then for a family hoilday you have more data yeah ... but again you can just spend $20 for 1GB for that one off time when you need it so it's not that big of an issue. If you have people on Skinny you get unlimited mins that could be good though. I just have 2 diff SIMs b/c I have one no. for banks and naggy people and the other for personal use. I am however probably look at a dual sim phone and one that supports the 850 and 900 frequency so I can utilise both networks. Edit - if you are a extreme low user or wanna save every penny then maybe Skinny. Skinny only needs a $5 top up. If you plan to travel with your phone Skinny doesn't do roaming data not that many would use it much but for the odd data use it can be useful. And hey if this was the 3 three SIM provider in NZ $50-100 per the oveseas trip budget isn't gonna break the bank and its much more convenient. For the casual rates - Skinny are now within 1c diff to 2D ie - their call rate and their data rate (ditto text).
