NZ economy was a total basket case when they got into power : so no one remembers 18% inflation, inefficient NZ manufacturers with govt protection reeming the public price wise , Govt owned companies that where still living with a 1950's attitude. God allmighty, there were sometimes 6 month waiting lists just to get a ph in East coast bays.(Ak) No one remembers the wage & price freeze that Douglas inherited & had to sort out . The NZ economy was 2nd lowest ranked in the OECD, we were being compared to Pakistan. When Douglas got into power there was a crisis, as NZ Govt literally had no money . The only alternative Douglas had was keep going as is, ie a Russian type protected & secluded economy . We know how well that works . Douglas had to bring NZ's 1940's style economy into the real world |
