403839 2005-11-12 06:59:00 Hey, as most people will know Internet browsers have a password saving ability.

I use Opera 8.5 and it has the password wand for passwords.

What I want to know is...how secure is this feature. I've never used any password remember features in my browsers to date because I wasn't certian of their security features.

If I used the password wand in Opera how safe would my passwords be?
Would it be worth the risk, or should I just remember my own passwords?

403840 2005-11-12 12:32:00 The passwords on Opera are pretty secure. I think it uses 128bit encryption however, if someone copies your wands.dat file from the profile folder they can get your passwords. If your really worried and someone else has access to your computer you can password protect the passwords. Go TOOLS -> PREFERENCES -> ADVANCED -> SECURITY -> SET MASTER PASSWORD.

my.opera.com is great for all your Opera needs

403841 2005-11-15 10:36:00 hmm, would there be anyway for a virus/toijan or anything to access that file and send it to someone?

I'm probally just being paranoid about my passwords, I have up to date virus scanner (as up to date as a virus scanner can be) a firewall (not winXP's crap one) a spyware scanner etc, so that'd probally protect it, right?

403842 2005-11-15 17:52:00 One one hand it concerns me a little as well, but on the other its such a damn good toy that I use it all the time. You just need to make sure your computer is secure first. netchicken (4843)
403843 2005-11-15 17:56:00 I doubt it .

But if you have a trojan on your system, / and you dont update the system often when updates come out, then yup, it can and will happen .

Some trojans don't do things by themselves .

A person can be at the other end of it .

You're asking for trouble if you use the wand for sensitive stuff. It's only good for sites that wouldn't endanger your bank balance.

I use the Wand for most of my passwords but no way do I ever save my banking password. In fact I don't even trust a bookmark to my banking sites but type in the address each time.

Speedy, I let the virus scanner update automatically when an update comes out, so I think it'd be safe for me to use Opera PW for forums and other accounts etc (not banking lol)
