403898 2005-11-12 06:28:00 Tips from Old Internet Geeks.

I'm an old internet computer geek (everyday from 1995)
and I would like to start this thread about really good honest general everyday PC tips.

Feel free to share your good old important useful everyday tips.

1. After mouse selecting text...
(There is a 'Tab' 'Tab' non-mouse way to select text too)

Keyboard Key 'Crtl' 'c' together = copy text. 'Crtl' 'v' together = paste text.
(Very handy for passwords, etc)

403901 2005-11-12 09:18:00 Tip #1: Organise your bookmarks into folders as you make them or you will never be able to find the specific one you are looking for.

Tip #2: Activate the popup blocker in your browser or download one if there isn't one built in.

Tip #3: Activate your mail server's anti-spam software, your email client's anti-spam software and add additional filters to block anything that still gets through.

403902 2005-11-12 10:33:00 Dont give out your real email address to online forms, this will reduce spam.

read a forum for a few days before you post, that way you are less likely to offend any one.

dont surf the dark side on the net. (pron and other dodgy things)

never open attachments unless you trust the sender and know what the files is.

try and use something other than IE. like firefox

try and use something other than outlook. like eudora

dont always take the word of the help desk.

dont give out your passwords to anyone, even the help desk.

dont trust every thing you read on the internet.

if you get an email that asks you to forward it to all your friends, dont do it, its probly a hoax or a virus.

never help anyone from Nigeria even if they have a lot of money and will share it with you :-)

403903 2005-11-12 10:38:00 hmmmm....I read this forum for a good year before I posted, and have still managed to offend people on a daily basis. Heh heh heh,

Anyhow, expanding on Emails and spam.

treat your email like you would your phone number, Don't give it out to anyone who doesn't need it, Once the spam avalanche starts it never slows down.

Create a throwaway address purely for signing up to Websites, and flame people for sending you junkmail.

Depending on the ISP, I wouldn't reccomend activating the anti-spam on the server side. I set my orcon email to mark spam with the "Spam" prefix & I am amazed at how many false positives it gets. Quite often when I am emailing home work from polytech, it gets marked as spam.

yahoo and hotmail make for good "throwaway" email addresses (not your isp one)

403906 2005-11-12 13:40:00 When typing name and password, type name, hit tab, then enter password. supergran (108)
403907 2005-11-12 16:13:00 For a reboot via keyboard:

Hit the WINDOWS KEY (the one with the flag) and then U and then R. This is a soft reboot.

To turn off the puter from the keyboard:

Hit the WINDOWS KEY then U then U again. This is a soft shutdown and allows all the files to be closed before shutting down. (Now...that's an olde idea..closing all files before shutting down!)
