2005-11-16 20:41:00 | Any Windows PC - Linux - OK Um no, not any PC. It is possible that the particualar distro one "upgades" with may not support your hardware without a long hunt for drivers, patches, or the need to modify .conf files. Ok, not that likely that it will all be custard, but, if its running OK under doze, then why open a big can of new stuff, and risk it being a can of worms? Just as installing that shiney new video card was a ***** to install 2 years ago under 'doze, you risk a similar set of issue under Linux. Also a modern Linux, like modern 'doze, is designed with the concept that the hardware has grunt. My sons recycled machines tend to get win '98 as i don't have a copy of *nix that will even install on his collection of recycled throw-outs. There's also the issue of people who wish to game not being able to install games easily - which may be an advantage for a family/flat computer ;) There's also the issue of why change to something the user isn't familiar with? Having said all that, If setting up a machine to do office work, web surfing, email, IM, Circuit board design, Graphic Image Manipulation, web design, etc, then Linux is a very good option. If its what the user has from day one, then its simpler than windows too. (I find windows too hard, and run exclusivly *nix) There's also a very good arguement for 2 machines, or a dual boot running *nix for the web, and 'doze for gaming. However, Linux is not for everyone. Lets not pretend it is :D

2005-11-16 23:25:00 | Windows 2K upgrade - Windows XP - Why ??? I find winXP a lot more convienent to use than 2k. I can't pinpoint exactly what is better about XP - I just like it more than 2k. I might try mandriva 2006 if I can find a few days when noone wants to use the net. If I wasn't on unlimited, there would be no way I would waste 4 gig on a single distro.

2005-11-17 06:42:00 | ........to go back to the tips. When I first started with comps I used to have a rule of... "If you don't know what it is leave it alone." This was to stop me meddling with things/apps/settings I knew nothing about. But that's all changed now.............now it's.... "If you don't know what is then find out."

2005-11-17 08:36:00 | When I got my first 'puter I insisted that I didn't want an OS, I wanted to do it myself. After a week of playing with bios settings I got bored and gave in and insalled DOS. Sooo much to do! I browesd the help files, leaned the commands, wrote *.txt files made pretty patern on the screen in Q Basic and edited the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Oh joy, my first crash. After a while the guy who sold me the machine regreted the offer of after sales service. I learned a lot. My only regret is that I got DOS instead of UNIX. :badpc:

2005-11-17 09:07:00 | Tip #7: Backup your computer fairly regular (as you will never know when they will be a life saver :), trust me here!) also If you own a website any type of site make sure you back that up fairly regular as well as you never know what will happen to the server & especially if you use a database of some type for a forum or blog etc . make sure you back that up fairly regular as well.
