403951 2005-11-15 05:02:00 yahoo and hotmail make for good "throwaway" email addresses (not your isp one)When you've finally attracted lots of free offers of cheap loans and enlargements for your more personal assets to your new disposable email address, publish it everywhere so it attracts as much spam as possible and let it die.
This type of address is known as a honeypot. Its there to distract spammers efforts, which believe it or not, are actually limited.
Filling the spammers databases with more and more addresses that don't actually reach anyone slows the game down for them.

Then get another one for your actual public use, as soon as it gets spam, repeat the first step.

I only get 1000 or so special marketing offers to delete arrive at junk@millerton.co.nz or chris@millerton.co.nz per month. What am i doing wrong?

403952 2005-11-15 05:22:00 Vanessa J Smith will try to sell you "cheap software" If you are running an email client with filter rules, automaticly delegate any messages from Vanessa J Smith to your trash bin

Turn off the option to automaticly download images from the web in your email.
This only lets spammers track their junk. The images tend to come from places like images.amazon.com

If that seems like a long random address name, it is, and the above example is almost certainly unique to the spam sent to junk@millerton.co.nz in a message in the last day or so. If that image loads, amazon.com can confirm to the spammer that the email sent to junk@millerton.co.nz has indeed been read, and is therefore worth keeping on the database.

Sorry, but spam is my pet hate, and when there's anything we can do to not fall victim to it, then yay!

403956 2005-11-15 08:42:00 One more,

If fixing anothers PC remember this...

The PC does not have the problem only the user. Spend time focusing on the user(s) as the PC does not care less.

If the PC has a probelm make sure the user unserstands, as best they can, what the effects of the problem are and what changes the solution if any will have.

A happy PC is a happy user.
