403918 2005-11-12 20:35:00 1 . If u can't be bothered getting patches / updates for Windows, esp XP, you only have yourself to blame . If you get hit by a vulnerability .

2 . Don't go to warez / crack sites . You only have yourself to blame, if u get trojans / worms .

3 . Be careful of fake emails from wherever about banks / ebay, etc asking for your username / password .

People are still dumb enough to go to the site in the email / haven't learnt to delete them .

4 . If you think you have a dialler on your system, don't take all day, thinking about how to remove it! Get rid of it, unless u want a BIG phone bill!

5 . After u install XP, REMEMBER to install SP1 or 2 after, so you wont get blaster, if you get on the net . Otherwise, you may have to start all over again .

6 . If you get smitfraud, do a google search for smitfraud . reg .

Once u find a site with the registry info on it, highlight the text, and save it as a reg file . Then run it / merge . Reboot . Voila . Byebye smitfraud :waughh:

403920 2005-11-12 22:11:00 dont surf the dark side on the net. (pron and other dodgy things)

never help anyone from Nigeria even if they have a lot of money and will share it with you :-)

You can get nasty stuff from the "light" side of the net too. The net is just a big rubbish dump, with a few treasures hidin amongst the trash.
Wear gloves. (Figuratively)

As for Nigeria, damn - you mean I'm not going to get the million dollars US I just won? :D

403922 2005-11-13 00:43:00 Depending on the ISP, I wouldn't reccomend activating the anti-spam on the server side. I set my orcon email to mark spam with the "Spam" prefix & I am amazed at how many false positives it gets. Quite often when I am emailing home work from polytech, it gets marked as spam.
I haven't actually tried an ISP's antispam software, but Spam Assassin is pretty good if you have your own domain name and hosting etc. :)

403927 2005-11-13 04:03:00 Hmmm.. tips - advice...

OK... always remember, there are alternatives that usually do a better job
e.g. Firefox, Thunderbird, Winamp, and so on can be used instead of Windows apps. Because it says Microsoft (or Nortons for that matter), doesnt make it better or the best.

Never do Alt +F4 when chatting :)

As offensive as he can be, always take Metlas comments with a grain of salt

Umm.. will think of more sometime...
