403642 2005-11-12 06:45:00 Evening folks,

I am trying to install the driver for my mates new graphics card - an ATI Radeon 9250SE. However, when I try to install the Catalyst 5.11 software for Windows 2000 I get the following error:
"Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adaptor with a standard VGA driver before running setup"

As the driver is not installed, one would assume that the computer is already using a "standard VGA driver".

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rene

403643 2005-11-12 06:57:00 First off, what was in their beforehand?

Removed any exsisting drivers?, entires in the device manager, killed it off if needed in the bios?

Anyhow, enter device manager, select the video card, remove/uninstall, whatever the W2k option is, reboot, let it detect the hardware and assign the driver, then trythe ATI install again.

If it dont work, rinse and repeat, only this time when given the option seect manual install and pick a standard VGA driver from the list.

Personally I have a hunch it wont make any difference but it cant hurt to try the suggestion that ATI came up with first....

403644 2005-11-12 07:03:00 Try this

-Manual Install-

First, uninstall the ATI display drivers from Add/Remove Programs if there is one listed and please DO NOT reboot when prompted.

1. Go into the Device Manger:

2. Expand the "Display Adapters" section and right click on the first item listed and select "Update Driver". If the "Display Adapters" section does not exist then check for "OTHER" Devices and the two items listed should be "Video Controller" and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)".

Example:
Radeon 9800 Pro <--- Right click on this and select "Update Driver"
Radeon 9800 Pro Secondary

OR

Video Controller <--- Right click on this and select "Update Driver"
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click "Next".
4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click "Next".
5. If you are asked to select the "TYPE" of the device you want to install, select "DISPLAY ADAPTERS" then click "Next".
6. Click on the "Have Disk" button, click "Browse". Point it to the C:\ATI\SUPPORT\??? (Driver name)\Driver\2KXP_INF
7. Select Open then OK and continue with the installation
8. Do not reboot if you are prompted.
9. Repeat steps 2 to 7 for the remaining item listed then REBOOT if prompted. Reboot manually if you are not prompted to do so to ensure system stability.

Extract the ATI exe file, if Winzip is installed, (right mouse / extract to folder option, so it extracts into its own folder).

Then when u get to step 7, point it to the folder from the above extraction, then point it to the ini file (if its there). Then see if it works.

Sometimes when you need low profile and passive cooling your options aren't so good..... don't knock it.

403650 2005-12-28 06:34:00 Hello, here is what I ended up doing.
I just found a way that worked for me. I was having the same problem. It seems, at least in my case to be a problem between ATI video cards and VIA chipsets. Go to Device Manager, Under system devices, uninstall the VIA CPU to AGP controller, and then reboot. This allowed me to install a standard VGA compatible device upon start up.
