404370 2005-11-15 01:22:00 I recently had a major crash with corrupted system files in my Windows 98SE system. I could not even boot to safe mode. After trying a few things, I put in my emergency boot floppy disk, and my Windows CD in the disk drive. Changing to the "D" drive I ran "Setup.exe" only to the point where it repairs window system files, looks for valid Registry keys etc.

This fixed my problems, apart from a few minor tweaks neede later on.

What I would like to know is, why haven't I seen this method publicised much, as it seems a lot easier than restoring your system etc. etc.

I'd be interested to hear comments from the wise - perhaps I'm missing something??

404371 2005-11-15 01:32:00 What is "Windows 98SE" sounds like a very old operating system - probally obsolete. Rob99 (151)

Windows 98 2nd Edition. Its the version of 98, that supports ICS.

Well, it is kind of. Altho quite a few ppl would still be using it. Other people maybe using 2000/XP/ other versions.

404373 2005-11-15 02:22:00 System restore will only fix Reg errors whilst Repair will resore corrupt or missing sys files, I think.

Because most of the posts are to do with fixing WinXP now...

404375 2005-11-15 03:52:00 yawn..............system restore doesn't exist within the 98 version......the nearest you can get is scanreg /restore.... drcspy (146)
404376 2005-11-15 03:56:00 The quickest fix for W3.1x was to just run setup.exe (in your 10MB directory which held all the installation files). Similarly with W95. So the same method for W98 would seem to be indicated. Graham L (2)

404378 2005-11-15 20:21:00 its called a dirty install or reinstall over the top.

its not a pefect way to repair a pc but its usually good enough to get the pc going again so you can save all your data before doing a full format and reinstall.

98 is certainly not obsolete. lots of buisnesses and homes still run it. it won't die even tho MS wants to kill it.

404379 2005-11-15 20:34:00 Basically its not well publiscized because its not the "official" way of doing it. Try that sorta stunt with WinXP and it'll warn you and it'll remove the old Documents and Settings/Windows directories.

Still, its the only way to fix it and usually works quite well :)
