2005-11-14 23:27:00 | if i had a phpbb forum on my website, with 1000 registered users, each posting 10 forum posts a day of 1500 characters, how much hard drive space on my server would that take up approixinately???? how space space would this pressf1 forum take up on a dedicated server?

2005-11-14 23:35:00 | how much hard drive space on my server would that take up approixinately????A bit difficult to answer, eg how long is a piece of string. You'll be adding to the disk usage every month, so ultimately it's pretty infinite. But a fair guess would be a couple of megs added per month. Of more concern would be the amount of bandwidth it'd use and the costs thereof. Probably looking at a couple of gigs per month.

2005-11-15 01:05:00 | 15 000 000 bytes per day, but it would depend on the table size and type of the database. | Rob99 (151) | |
2005-11-15 01:06:00 | Like Greg said its a bit difficult to answer as there many thing you have to put in to the mix like will users be able to upload Avatar?, will users be able to attach thing to there posts? That type of thing. The only way you will be able to find this out is when you do have that type of numbers then you might get an idea then.

2005-11-15 23:20:00 | lance4k A phpbb the size that you described will ultimately grow fairly quickly, and there is more to consider than just how much space you will require as it will always be growing. phpbb pruning is an option if you wish to keep the forum down in size but is not ideal as ultimately anything older than x ammount of days is gone. If you plan to run your own server you will most likely struggle with your bandwidth supply. If your site is hosted elsewhere proffessionally the cpu usage of your site may be a factor particularly on a shared server if it is affecting other clients on the server.(most webhosts specify a certain ammount of exceptable cpu usage) and if it goes over that your site may be suspended until you are able to afford a dedicated. If your phpbb is being started from scratch it will generally take quite sometime to reach the level of participation that you have outlined. make sure that you have flexibility when choosing a host/plan so that you can grow your site the way you want. JMHO. :) Mike

2005-11-15 23:29:00 | As others have said, bandwidth and server load should be a bigger concern than the amount of space the posts will take up. A forum with 10,000 posts each day is a pretty busy forum. Remember that starting a forum isn't as easy as it sounds so if you don't currently have that many visitors you would be better to start with shared hosting and upgrade as necessary. :) | maccrazy (6741) | |
