405837 2005-11-19 03:07:00 Hi, my friend and I have been studying webdesign for a few years now, but one thing they don't teach us is HOW to get work, especially if you don't actually have any working experience... So we were wondering if anybody can give us some real-world advice on how to score some work, even very basic, el-cheapo paid work, just anything to get us started. Can anybody help us out? Or direct us to any good websites where we will be able to find some work?
Thanks heaps everyone~

405840 2005-11-19 03:37:00 yeah build a reputation.

Maybe cold call business asking if they need a site?
I think viral marketing or word of mouth seems to work.

Its an over populated field unfortunatly with little or no money in it unless you are at the top.

I imagine tat sooner or later it will become like desktop publishing, where everyone does it, then the market will just dry up.

405841 2005-11-19 03:43:00 Locate local designers - try Google web design site:NZ or similar and call on them personally. You're looking a a short-term apprenticeship. You might touch lucky with someone with a load of work on. Scouse (83)
405842 2005-11-19 03:48:00 I'd suggest looking through the sites hosted on Xtra's servers bizzack. They are normally terribly designed because they are owned by people who don't know much about the internet (proof of this is the fact they actually pay Xtra's exorbitant prices). Send them a few emails asking whether they want their site redesigned for free. Once you have a portfolio of about five sites start charging small amounts, maybe $150 per site and as you get better and your portfolio grows you can start charging more and seek bigger jobs which involve more than designing a couple of pages. :) maccrazy (6741)
405843 2005-11-19 05:14:00 I'm about to put up a website for my company, but I'm not in a raging hurry, so if you want some free practice on a for-real job you can PM me. I'm not prepared to subsidise your learning curve, but if it works out ok I'll pay a pre-agreed sum that we decide before you start.

Depends on where you are located though, because if you are going to do sites properly you need to build a relationship with the client and in most cases that means meeting face to face to discuss requirements and ideas.

Cheers

405844 2005-11-19 06:29:00 I have to disagree about the in-person thing. I've only done one web for someone I know. :)

Anyway, try www.rentacoder.com (no fee unless you earn and very competitive until you get some good feedback) and www.elance.com (fee to bid jobs).

PM me for my email address. If you're good, I can probably do the same as the other guy...get you a bit of work, but hubby and I generally get about $500 for a 10-page web--depending. It's usually in relation to some other project, tho. The last couple we did:

405845 2005-11-19 07:55:00 Also something to consider if you will possibly be doing free/almost free websites, why not also have these websites sign up for web hosting through you, it may be a good way to start creating a recurring income while building a portfolia. I could point you in the right direction for web space to sell and it could be a good way to get started.
As maccrazy has suggested It would be good to start targeting some of the less attractive sites available to see through Xtra's listings.

405846 2005-11-19 08:05:00 If I were you, I would build say 3 websites and put them online at a free hosting site maybe... then keep an eye on Seek IT as well as others for anyone whos looking for web designers. For a C.V just point them to your sites :)

as an idea, not sure how feasible
