Perhaps one day you could be let loose, but you would need a fair amount of retraining first. Nah nah, wrong. I'm experienced enough to know what I'm doing. Been doing it for years. Enough said. |

| 405353 | 2005-11-19 09:20:00 | The sticker has disappeared. Yes, I could pull it out of WIndows though. He has a CDRW - but he has no idea what he is doing really. Hence why he wants the tech to rescue it all. It DOES need a format - I have seen it already. He is a retired guy - he doesn't want to nor should he have to buy Windows again when he already bought it. That HDD isn't going anywhere near my system thanks very much. I am not an idiot - I know what it needs - I am basically just trying to avoid it. And because I am busy with several others at present. And because I can. Anyway thanks anyway - its been arranged now. |

| 405354 | 2005-11-19 10:45:00 | But you're not a tech...are you... What's the difference between a tech and a computer-literate person? ;) :p Cheers :) |

| 405356 | 2005-11-19 11:23:00 | But do a lot of Qualifications make any real difference in the real world? e.g A+, CCNA, Diploma from Uni etc I thought it was real life hands on experience that did the trick |

| 405357 | 2005-11-19 11:35:00 | As long as I am aware of what I am doing, I don't think qualification should be a hindrance. Will customers ask for techs' qualifications whenever they service the customers' computers? :groan: Cheers :) |

It takes a bigger man to admit he understands the magnitude of that which he does not know! Qualifications in some cases dont mean didly squat. Two quick personal reflections: Ive had to call through to our second level support because at the time I didnt have the access to modify the clients AD Account. I ended up guiding the MCSA tech through step-by-step making these modifications in Active Directory because he couldnt but still had the piece of paper. I dont. Also: We were left in the class (Im now doing MCSA, courtesy of my employers) to solve a few simple problems with networking after a clean installation. Had to complete certain tasks/lockdowns etc. I ended up taking half the class while the tutor sat back and watched as helped the rest of the class through the understanding of permissions, filesystem security levels, inheritance etc. Still, I have no qualification, but I can do it. And I dont blame Pctek, ive seen some nasty ones that I just _really_ (at the time) wished I could have pawned off elsewhere due to higher priorities :( |

| 405359 | 2005-11-19 12:19:00 | I agree entirely with Chill, and if you don't have the qualifications OR the proven experience, then carry about $1,000,000 of Professional Indemnity cover if you are straying into commercial IT systems servicing on your own . But without at least one of the above you probably will not get the cover . One of my clients requires ALL people providing such services to carry a standard $10 million in indemnity cover . Others are more reasonable at $250,000 . Thats the cost of a new car every year in premiums in the first case . Once you start dealing in providing services to companies, either be qualified or have good proven experience or both . Its entirely different to fixing home PCs, there are huge liabilities . Also register as a LTD company to protect your own assets . Then argue about who will fix the companys PCs, or get a written waiver of liability first . . . . |

| 405361 | 2005-11-19 18:52:00 | I'm in agreeance too with what Chilling_Silence said. Although I do have A+ cert, compared to the likes of Metla, Pctek, bartsdadhomer (to name a few) I know jacksh*t I did have the opportunity to do practical work experience in the industry (till they started jackin me round) for a short time and learnt heaps more than from the book. Still know jacksh*t though |
