406138 2005-11-21 20:31:00 I have decided on an AMD dual core 3800 cpu for my next machine build but have had no experience with AMD mobo's . In fact, suitable X2 939 mobos seem pretty thin on the ground . My needs are pretty standard but I would like onboard 1394 and guess I should go for PCI-E . As a guide to my requirements, I am currently looking at the ASUS A8N5X but I am not fixed on anything at this stage .

Pricewise $160-$220ish .

Anyone with experience of suitable mobos, knowledge of dogs to avoid etc, would be a help in my search . TIA .

406139 2005-11-21 20:38:00 ASUS A8N5X is a good board but doesn't have onboard firewire .

Asus A8N5X 939pin socket AMD Athlon64FX/AthlonX2/Athlon64 nForce4 HT1000 ATX 4*DDR400 Max4G ECC (Dual Channel) 1*PCI-ExpressX16, 3*PCI, 2*PCI-ExpressX1, 1*PCI-ExpressX2, 8CH Audio, 10*USB2 . 0, Gb LAN, IDE:SATA*4 (RAID0,1,0+1,JBOD), 133*2

I would look at the Asus A8N-E as well .

Asus A8N-E socket 939 AMD Athlon64FX nForce4Ultra HT1000 ATX 4*DDR400 Max4G (Dual Channel) 1*PCI-ExpressX16, 3*PCI, 2*PCI-ExpressX1, 1*PCI-ExpressX4 (supports up to 1GB/s), 8CH Audio, 10*USB2 . 0, GB LAN, IDE:SATA*4, 133*2; RAID:SATA2 . 0*4(RAID0,1,JBOD)

You dont have any choice on going with PCI-E, All the new boards use it .

Wheres the firewire on the A8N-E??

And there are still Socket 939 ASUS boards with AGP, although I would recommend going to PCI-E .

If you don't want to buy a graphics card just yet - there is the A8N-VM, this has firewire, a PCI-E graphics slot as well as onboard GF6100 graphics .

406141 2005-11-21 22:59:00 1. I never said the second board had firewire, Just that his nominated board didn't.

2. Look at his CPU of choice, Find a motherboard in NZ that suports that dual core cpu and has an AGP slot and I will eat my shorts, my socks, my shoes, my underpants, and the strange mold between my toes.

406142 2005-11-22 01:01:00 Sorry, Metla, better get lots of something strong to wash it all down . The ASUS A8V supports X2 and has AGP and 5 PCI slots .

Darn, somehow thought the A8N5X had firewire - must have got confused . The A8N SLI has .

A8N-VM is a thought but was wanting ATX .

Thanks, all, for comments .

406143 2005-11-22 01:12:00 Lmao.

Doh!

- Supports AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64FX/Athlon 64 X2/Athlon 64
-1 x AGP8X/4X

Personally I would take an nForce chipset over a Via one.

406144 2005-11-22 06:17:00 Metla - all the socket 939 ASUS boards suppot dual core now.

Linw - maybe you need to go up to an A8n-SLI then if you want ATX. Have a look on Asus website at the different models and do a comparison....

406145 2005-11-22 07:47:00 Yes, And I assumed (based on my main pricelist) that the new boards had all dropped AGP as well, Fraid I rarely stray into the Via side of things unless I can't avoid it, I have a penchant for all things nForce . . . . .

. . . . . On a positive note, This toe fungas is pretty damn tasty, Like Steak flavoured cheese . . . .

406146 2005-11-22 08:00:00 Thanks, guys. Yes, the A8N SLI is an option. I do have a firewire PCI card so could go with a non firewire board but sort of thought having one on board leaves a PCI slot free (for what I don't know!).

Cheers, and hope you survive, Metla.

406147 2005-11-22 08:14:00 The only thing with the PCI firewire card is, it may use 32 bit drivers .

And 64 bit windows (if u decide to use it) wont load 32 bit drivers .

So, if u do or will be installing 64 bit windows, I would check the site for 64 bit drivers, for the PCI card .
