2005-11-21 19:03:00 | Hi guys, I have a PC that I am afraid to say has been neglected for a while now. Its been showing a few signs of slowing down and things so I decided that I need to do a spring clean on it. Specs- HP 533a 2ghz Celeron 256MB RAM(shared with video) 40GB hardrive etc... My question is, can you guys tell me what are the sort of 'Top 10' maintanence tasks to do with your PC for an idiot like me. (That is short of backing up and re-formatting as I don't have any OS disks for the PC) For instance somewhere I read about reducing the number of programs in startup to free up RAM. Can you guys tell me more about this and how I go about it? Thanks Paul

2005-11-21 19:09:00 | You could get Ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) to get rid of the crap on the hdd. Defrag the hdd in safe mode. What version of Windows is installed? Depending on what version of Windows, you're using, you can either go to start/run and type in msconfig, and look under the startup tab. Tell us, whats here, and we'll tell u what can be deleted. Or use ccleaner, run it, then go to tools/startup and you can delete startup entries here.

2005-11-21 19:16:00 | The ultimate clean is a reinstall. Being an HP, no you don't have CDs - but you would have a Recovery partition. This would put the PC back to how it was when bought. Secondly, clean out the temp folders etc. Uninstall anyhting not being used. Check for spyware and viruses. And clean up the registry. Mine stays clean by having an original Ghost Image. I made it when it was first set up and configured. Anything new added, I ghost the original image back, then add the new hardware or whatever then reghost it. So its clutter free. The original image I keep - never know when I want it really clean and back to the minimal setup.

2005-11-21 19:37:00 | Find someone with a copy of the same version of windows as you & make a copy of their CD. This is perfectly legal because Microsoft let you make backups of your windows CDs & you have already purchased that version of windows. | Greven (91) | |

Thanks, APul |

2005-11-22 08:33:00 | I was trying to schedule some tasks earlier in the Control Panel Sheduled Task Manager but when I tryed to schedule tasks(Spybot scans etc.) my PC wanted me to type my username and password in. I tried to type the one I first had when I got the PC but since I got it it has crashed and been completely restored so I am not sure whether my old usnername/password still works. Anyway, the computer won't schedule tasks because the usernames and passwords aren't right or something. Can someone tell me how I can change the usnername/password while still retaining everything in my present account?BTW- there is only one account on the PC. Thanks, Paul
