406874 2005-11-23 20:16:00 On one of the sites I own I want to put a video up and have it display in an embedded windows media player on the page, I already no how to do that. But I don't want visitors to the site to be able to download it (e.g., right click on the embedded media player, copy and paste the location of the video and download it).
Disabling right clicking is not good enough, I want to no how to make a .asf playlist thing like music video sites do. so even if you right click and copy the link location you will only download a playlist file and the location of the media is kept a secret.

Any idea how I would go about doing this...?

Cheers :)

406876 2005-11-27 11:42:00 How badly do you want to protect your content? The simplest way to do what you are talking about is using an asx container file. Here's a microsoft supplied example:

<ASX version = "3.0">
<TITLE>Simple ASX Demo</TITLE>

<TITLE>An Entry in a Simple ASX</TITLE>
<AUTHOR>Microsoft Corporation</AUTHOR>
<COPYRIGHT>(c)2003 Microsoft Corporation</COPYRIGHT>
<REF HREF = "mms://windowsmediaserver/path/yourfile.asf" />
</ENTRY>
</ASX>

Realise of course that anyone who does "view source" and sees your asx file can download that, open in notepad and get content anyway. Many sites use tricky redirects and such to try to foil attempts but it is always possible (I often download music videos from these sites myself). This will deter the casual surfer. The only true way to prevent unauthourised use is with DRM but boy oh boy what a nightmare!

406877 2005-11-27 18:02:00 How about building your site in Flash...that way when users right click it will just show the flash configurations...with no options to save etc... Mr Wetzyl (362)

If I were you, I would view the source code, look for that particular flash file ending with .swf, fire up my download manager and copy the URL to the flash and download it. However, somehow I can't do that toward Google Video. :confused: :blush:

406879 2005-11-27 21:26:00 i have to ask........

whats the point of having a video on your site if your not going to let anyone download it ?? don't forget not many have broadband and streaming video is fairly poor on 56k (or like the rest of us 33k at best).

Yes, you can download the Flash file if the video is stored in it, but I think there is also a way to tell Flash to load a video stored somewhere else on the server (ie. not part of the actual Flash file).

If someone can watch an embedded video, they can download it as well. There is no way of stopping this.

Make a popup with no toolbars at all and put in your video. Disable right-click as well.That won't work because you can just make the address bar visible if you want to. ;)

Basically the video is copyrighted and I only have permission to show it if I do not make it available for the public to download. People can only watch it being streamed. I no its almost impossible to stop people from being able to download a streamed video, but I can sure enough make it alot harder for them.
I have got it sorted now anyway, I have disabled right clicking to stop people from easily viewing the souce code, but if they do work out how to view the source code (its not hard) the URL of the video is linked to an .asx playlist file, and that asx file is linked to another asx file, then that asx file is linked to yet another asx file and so on.... in total the first asx file links to 5 other asx files before finaly being linked to the url of the video... I think that should keep it from being easily downloaded :D
