406396 2005-11-22 07:59:00 Hey Guys

A coulpe of questions about SLI.

1. Is it worth the price increase?

2. Do you get much performance increase?

3. Would it be worth me spending an extra $100 on an SLI motherboard and getting one 7800GT but having SLI for latter upgrade?

4. Or would it be better to spend $100 less on a motherboard and get a 7800GTX for a total of $100 more than the 7800GT setup?

This system will be used for everyting form 3D gaming to everyday surfing pressf1 :D

Thanks for your input in advance :D

406397 2005-11-22 08:14:00 Performance benifit as thrown around at Futuremark (a benchmarking comminuty) suggests under optimal circumstance you can get a 30 percent increase in game performance . But this is only when the nVidia have supplied a game profile in the driver .

If not you have to create your own and alternate frame rendering can't be selected, In this case you have to try the other ways they can render the graphics, Reports vary between running slower, no change, and a performance increase . . . Though rarely anything near 30 percent . Its also game and system depentant .

Imo its a waste of time, I would suggest buying a non-SLI board and one video card, in a years time you can use the money saved to buy the latest and greatest card which would kill your SLI setup, and you can of couse sell the card you replaced .

SLI would be worthwhile if your made of money and aren't bothered by diminishing returns, and you just have to have the most powerful set up available right this minute .

Don't take my word for it though, research is the key .

SLI = 2 cards at double the cost of one.
I'd get the better card.
I have a SLI board but am using one card - the SLI wasn't a factor in my purchase of the board - it was all the other stuff I liked.

406399 2005-11-22 09:14:00 Myself I would just go for the 7800gt but I would wait and get one of the new ones that are coming out that has 512mb of ram on it. :D

I think if you had a 7800gt and a 7800gtx running side by side on identical set ups to the naked eye you would not see or know the difference.

If you benechmark yes it would make a difference, and then what?

Get the best DFI/MSI/ASUS,etc mb with no SLI.
:)

And save what money you can to spend on a good cpu, etc.

I agree with what Metla said in his post. :)

406400 2005-11-22 09:19:00 My golden rule..

spend more than $1000 = crazy man :)

SLI isn't really quite there yet (along with dual processors/cores).

406401 2005-11-22 09:48:00 spend more than 500 bucks on a graphics card and thats crazy. Prescott (11)
406402 2005-11-22 19:24:00 Don't take my word for it though, research is the key . This is research, I am asking all of you who know about this for your opinion .

SLI = 2 cards at double the cost of one . Yeah . I worked out I can get 2 6600GT 256MB for around the same price as a single 780GTX . and I am guessing that a single 7800GTX will kick the pants off 2 6600GTs :D

Myself I would just go for the 7800gt but I would wait and get one of the new ones that are coming out that has 512mb of ram on it . :D
But there is no need for 512MB yet, the gaming programers will not be on that for a long time because the cards are too expensive for the consumers .

Get the best DFI/MSI/ASUS,etc mb with no SLI . Yeah I am most likely going to go non SLI with DFI's Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D . (the only non SLI DFI board)

406403 2005-11-22 19:26:00 spend more than $1000 = crazy man :) Well then I guess you are calling me crazy. Na the reasoning is below.

spend more than 500 bucks on a graphics card and thats crazy. Well here is the reasoning behind it, I have never had a fast computer that can really do anything, I am currently running on a P1 133 :groan: and the idea is to get the best possible computer I can so I can stay up with the play sort of thing for a long time.:D

406404 2005-11-22 21:00:00 3. Would it be worth me spending an extra $100 on an SLI motherboard and getting one 7800GT but having SLI for latter upgrade?According to this excellent article (www.dansdata.com) (albeit several months old), yes. Greg (193)
406405 2005-11-23 00:01:00 Currently the best option is to go with a single card. As stated before, the benefits of SLI will only be apparent if the games you are playing have been coded (or include coding) for SLI... It may be a while before games are regularly made with SLI in mind.

Save your pennies and go with the single 7800 card.

cheers
