Just set your CDROM to first boot device in the BIOS, chuck in the 98SE CD and run setup, 98SE will reinstall over the top and unless the problems you are having has corrupted all the data on the disk you won't lose anything
Easy Peasy.
But as always, don't leave anything to chance, take that hard drive out transfer the data you don't want to lose then reinstall

407042 2006-03-20 22:15:00 I would boot to a DOS prompt, rename the 'Windows' folder to something like 'oldwin' then reinstall Win98 making sure it goes into a folder called 'Windows'.
This way you get a fresh install of Windows but your data is safe.

407043 2006-03-20 22:20:00 yeh you need to be 'in' the cd then do this type in

dir

then tap enter......that'll show you the names of the files/folders in the cd.....the setup files are *usually*.....from memory in the win98 folder......if the dir result shows a folder called win98 then you should be able to enter it by typing in

cd win98

then tap enter then carry on as per the instructions...

407044 2006-03-20 22:22:00 yeh and if they rename the windows folder they WONT get a 'repair' install and altho their DATA is 'safe' they'll have to reinstall EVERY other program on the system........not quite what I was suggesting........the repair install usually works very well....... drcspy (146)
407045 2006-03-20 23:50:00 Hi All, Thanks for all the comments. I have successfully done this proceedure now. Well... I have got online with the new reinstall anyway... Appologies to Drcspy but I have taken a section of his 'howto' and made comments in it on how it was done here:

then tap enter that should take you 'into ' the cd ...........then type in

cd win98

then tap enter

(comment: got "invalid directory". Did not need this step at all. Went straight to setup below)

then type in

setup

then tap enter

then you'll be starting the 98 setup ......it'll run scandisk then you have to tap X and the rest of the setup will continue.........at some stage it'll give you the option of installing to 'windows.000' or .............custom install .......choose custom install then clik 'next' then in the 'custom install' box type in

(comment: no "custom install" option but chose " other directory")

windows

(comment: "C:\windows" was required)

Everything else went fine. Looks like my video drivers have gone back to the Win98 ones so will have to update. And the display settings have changed, otherwise everything looks fine.

A happy chappy here.

Thanks to All, especially Drcspy : :D
