2005-11-22 07:52:00 | Any other devices work on that PCI slot? Perhaps when the motherboard drivers are loaded the PCI fails, Seen it before without coming to a 100 percent conclusion apart from deciding the motherboard had a fault, An external fixed the issue.

2005-11-22 08:45:00 | I remember someone here once said that a faulty power supply caused problems with a modem on one particular computer. Can't remember the details but as the modem shows in safe mode in your particular case it might be worth looking into. Has a new piece of hardware been recently added that may be overloading the PSU a little? Just thought it might be worth mentioning.

2005-11-22 16:44:00 | thanks guys..........Metla .....yep I'm starting to wonder about taht mobo but it's got me stumped why the modem appears in device manager while in safe mode but the device manager box simply appears BLANK in normal windows.......this tends to suggest to me that the system IS seeing the modem but *something* is interfering while in windows.....perhaps a corrupt system file ?.....thinkin of a repair install...... foxyMx .....no new hardware and if it was the psu .......well......i cant see that affecting the ability of the device manager to display it's stuff while in windoze but lettting it work fine in safe mode..........weird....

2005-11-23 03:11:00 | The Device Manager page is completely blank if not in Safe Mode? That means that no devices at all appear in Device Manager? If so, it's probably not a modem problem; it's something worse . :D There's something naughty which doesn't get started in Safe Mode . Scan for viruses, trojans, etc .

2005-11-23 03:13:00 | you got it right...........yeh done the scans removed whatever was there.......no change however according to the owner.......i've suggested the next move might be a repair install......... | drcspy (146) | |
2005-11-23 03:28:00 | I'd try removing and reinstalling the network stuff. Though a repair install might be needed anyway. | Graham L (2) | |
2005-11-24 01:49:00 | A posting today, reviving an old thread, by a new member SianKJones might give the answer. See the "Empty Network Connections" thread. ContextPlus looks like a possible nasty. | Graham L (2) | |
2005-11-25 20:13:00 | pc suddenly decided it didn't have a modem....have swapped it to another slot....no go...put new modem .....no go.....removed several viruses/spyware still no change..... interestingly enough it'll show the modem as installed in safe mode but when you goto windows and try to popup device manager it'll popup but it's blank......yes regedit works Sorry to tell you this, but you have a virus (type unknown). I have heard of several cases personally with the same problems as you. Anti virus vendors do not seem to have a patch for it yet. Quckest solution would be to back up your data and do a 'cold' reinstall of windows. Repairing windows may work but you have to locate and remove the virus first or your problem will resurface.
