406862 2005-11-23 01:21:00 I've brought medieval total war for a good deal but I have a problem.
I cannot read disk one, well most of disk one and the wife lost the reciept.

So I have a legit copy of a game and can't read most of disk one. Any suggestions

406863 2005-11-23 01:45:00 If it's legit, take it back to the store (despite having no receipt), and see what they can do. If they can identify that it's legit, they may be able to replace the disk. somebody (208)
406864 2005-11-23 02:05:00 I wish that would work but I've seen what they are like with returns without reciept. apparition (3207)
406865 2005-11-23 02:15:00 I've returned a new game CD that had a defective surface (it was kind of bubbling) without a receipt to EB games in Dunedin.

They simply asked the approx. time and date I purchased it, and looked up their transactions to find the match. Got a replacement CD.

406866 2005-11-23 03:11:00 That's a confusing bit. There is no physical damage to the surface that I can see and that's why I put in another drive into my machine to rule that out.

The files that won't read are inconsistant and I also tried reading from another operating system.

406867 2005-11-23 03:23:00 Copy protection is the likely culprit. I've had some game discs that did the same thing - you'd get partway through an installtion and it would throw up and error about being unable to read a disc.

I tracked the problem down to macrovision or other similar copy protect routines on the disc being incompatible with the drive. Same discs installed fine on another PC.

I gather you've tried installing another drive? How many Pcs have you tried the installtion on?

406869 2005-11-23 03:33:00 I've only tried installing on one PC so maybe I should try another. I have another drive sitting in the spare room...

I hope it's not the kind of protection I've read about that throws a hissy at the mere presence of a particular drive.

I will trawl for something like that on the new, thanks.

I suppose I must try everything however unlikely. Hmm how long does 512mb take through memtest86...

406871 2005-11-23 03:39:00 If it's bad you'll get results fairly quickly. Installations often use memory that isn't often accessed. The tester accesses all of it. You only need to find one error to know there's a problem. It takes a long time of not finding errors to have reasonable confidence of there being none.

As for "unlikely", my rule is "the less the statistical chance of something happening, the nearer to 1 the probability of its happening". :D
