407325 2005-11-25 00:24:00 Windows explorer is very slow. When I click on the explorer icon on my desktop the contents of C: are displayed on the right but the lefthand folder tree does not open. C: is highlighted but to display the whole tree I have to click on the + sign at C: and wait 30secs for the tree to open.
Also if I click on the My Computer icon it takes about 30secs for the drive folders to appear.
I don't know if I have explained this problem very well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I should add that I have checked for virii, malware, etc. and cleaned out redundant files and cookies and cleared the registry.

407326 2005-11-25 00:41:00 What happens? Does it sit and wait then display or are the icons slowly line by line displaying? pctek (84)
407327 2005-11-25 02:03:00 When I click on the My Computer icon on my desktop the little flashlight appears
and "searches" for about 30secs and then the drive folders appear at once.
Similarly in Explorer, 30 secs after I click on a + at the little my computer icon the folder tree appears quickly.

Lack of ram?
Clutter? - The registry can get cluttered.
1. Open Regedit
2. Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER (entire root branch)
3. Export to file CU.reg (put somewhere safe)
4. Reboot to DOS.
5. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder (or whatever your active profile name is)
6. Copy NTUSER.DAT to a safe place
7. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\Default User' folder
8. Copy NTUSER.DAT to 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder, overwriting old file (237 KB).
9. Reboot XP
10. Ignore the default desktop, and program errors or defaulted options.
11. Open Regedit
12. Import CR.reg (ignore the error message)
13. Reboot XP
14. Tidy up desktop icons (close the welcome to XP popup).

407329 2005-11-25 04:31:00 Isn't it just better to burn all your stuff to disc and do a re-format? I do it whenever my PC is running alot slower than usual and it works fine maverickoc (7240)
407330 2005-11-26 23:58:00 Thanks for all your help. The computer seems to have fixed itself! The explorer folder tree now opens as expected.
I was using Picasa to upload a photo from the camera and Email it. After closing Picasa I realized that Explorer was back to normal, so I hope it stays fixed!
