407150 2005-11-24 03:22:00 My Windows XP SP2 machine is not recognising my BENQ 1625 DVD-RW drive correctly. It is installed as Master and second Samsung drive is Slave by jumper settings. The BENQ is location 0 and Samsung 1. Drive letters are actually assigned in reverse order Master is F: and Samsung is E:. I tried manually changing the drive letters to see if that would help, but no joy.

BENQ Q-Video won't work and states it can't access the drive.

What can I do to fix this? I also notice that when I open QSuite it always lists the slave first and the Master second.

One other thing is that on the cable for the drives the Master is at the end and the Slave is plugged in before that, but this shouldn't make any difference, should it?

I have only had problems recently after cloning and installing a second hard drive. Wonder if that could be a cause?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

407151 2005-11-24 03:34:00 Delete the dvd burner in device manager and reboot . See if that fixes it .

Whats this ? Samsung drive is Slave by jumper settings? A hard drive?

If its on the same IDE as the burner, take it off .

And put it on primary master or slave, if nothing is on primary slave .

And what kind of cable is connected to the burner? A 40 / 80 wire ide cable?

Hdd's and burners shouldn't be on the same ide connection .

407152 2005-11-24 03:51:00 Sorry, Samsung CD-RW/DVD-Rom drive is set as slave and is the first connection (away from the MOBO) on the IDE cable (the wide cable).

I'll try deleting the drive in device manager and reboot thing tonight.

I actually tried disabling the CD-RW drive to see if Benq's Qvideo would recognise the only available drive, but it wouldn't.

Cheers

407153 2005-11-24 04:57:00 The IDE MA/SL/CS thing can cause all sorts of problems. If you have a 40 wire cable on these optical drives, have a good look at it. If there is one wire missing after the middle connector, it's a CS cable. Although the jumpers should override that, some manufacturers have had trouble understanding the standard. :D If wire 29 is cut, the middle connector will be the Master one, and the connector with one wire missing will be the Slave. (That's why some such cables are marked with the middle connector assigned to the motherboard.) This could be why the drive letters are being mixed up. (I suppose XP is responsible for C & D both being on the other IDE cable ... the normal order would be IDE1 : C, E; IDE2 : D, F).

It could be that the IDE controllers on the drive aren't quite sure which of them is the master. Try switching them on the cable if it has got the cut wire.
