407019 2005-11-24 08:33:00 Could also look at this, These cases are tiny, cheap, have a reasonable PSU (nothing great but but better then alot of mini cases I have seen), well layed out and easy to work on.

407020 2005-11-24 08:54:00 i suppose what i'm looking for is an economicly priced motherboard, with everything onboard and a slim PSU that i can cram in a case the size of jaycars case and if possible a tiny vidcard of quality - sorry graphics card, vidcard is not a poncy enough word nowadays.

Dimensions in mm (all units 482.6mm wide):
2U
Panel Height 88.1
Cabinet Height 83.1
Cabinet Depth 335
I may be pushing stuff uphill with the cabenet depth of 335mm though.

I do have the engineering skills to mount HDDs etc in an empty box using parts pilferred from a gutted case

Also, how well do computer CD/DVD roms handle heavy vibration? I dumped the audio CD i had in the rig before as strong bass made the CD skip.

407021 2005-11-25 02:18:00 You don't need "real" rack cases. Many DEC minicomputers such as the micro11s and microVaxen could be used floor standing (on end), desktop (flat) or rack mounted. Rackmounting was just a matter of bolting on a couple of angle brackets (or, if you had lots of money, rack slides). Graham L (2)

Hard drives handle a bit of air-driven vibration a lot better than CD/dvd drives (or so I've heard). Greg (193)
407023 2005-11-25 08:09:00 Hello
You could just take your original tower or whatever case you use and change the componentry. In the case of a tower is it harder but if you use those box ones look around in Chinese computer shops and you can get cheap motherboards, processors, CD reader/writer and DVD reader/writer. Also try ''Trade Me'', really good deals on it will be found there. Don't waste money getting a new case and modifying it.

Hello
You could just take your original tower or whatever case you use and change the componentry...........My current set up is a gutless flaptop. This concept is providing a suitable box to allow a new machine to travel with the rest of my rackmounted audio toys, and leave gutless flaptop the tasks of email, web etc. If i gut a case, it will be from someones junk pile.

407026 2005-11-25 22:56:00 Your solution lies here (www.tradef1.co.nz)! Greg (193)
407027 2005-11-25 23:13:00 Um... Greg, i don't think it is.

The key word here would have to be "rackmountable" followed by "87mm high". To avoid complicating my life, it must fit in the same rack as the associated audio gear, and therefore has to be standard 19" rack dimensions, or easily adapted to them. To be specific, it must fit into the top rack pictured here (www.millerton.co.nz) along with the EQ's desk-PSU, etc.

Although a cheap computer that i could just hook multi HDDs to might be the answer to what i want it for, it doesn't solve the portability issues like a rackcase would.
