408307 2005-11-28 04:53:00 i rencently thought i would help a friend by taking some ram out of mi computer and putting it in his machine. i orginally had 490 but took two out of four sticks out. (a 128 and a 256) i gave him the 128 and return the 256 back in, upon boot windows XP promptly displayed this computer has been shut down wrong ......(a whole black screen with writing) and did i want to start in safe mmod or normally. i choose normally thinking all is ok, the computer restarted by its self and came back to this screen. weird i thought so i choose start with last known good configuration... same result. now i got panicky, so i like most ppl who understand a clear slate is good when and got the winxp home cd and started to install again, forgetting a about WPA (which i reregistered a month ago!!!) Xp got the stage where it started to copy files onto the harddrive for setup, it stopped at 18% while trying to read data.cab. after a long wait and nothing happening (no cd spinning or harddrive churning) i thought well ill use another OS, Windows .Net server 2003 (RC2 120 days trail) this time it could not copy files as it could not find them on the cd (yes it is a copy given to me by a comp. tech) windows NT (both server and client 4.0) whine about the hard drive being too big (37GB) 5gb partition) i am at a loss at why no OS will actually install. i want to be able to at least listen to music on saturday. aidanmaz (7180)
408308 2005-11-28 05:08:00 The most likely explanation is faulty RAM.

Installing Windows will always find faulty RAM, and it shows up as files not being able to be read from the CD.

408309 2005-11-28 06:38:00 i did put 32mb in and turn the pc on and there was a horrible smell and i thought that this was not good so turn the computer off immediately, upon pulling the stick out i just about burnt myself as it was so hot! this was prior to installing anything. does this mean ALL my ram (360mb) is faulty? or just some? and how will i know with out tryin to install windows with diff combos of the ram slots? i have a 256, and two other amounts of SD ram

should i try with just the 256?
the POST and BIOS reads all the memory though and if i try to boot frm HDD you get the cannot find boot disk and at the top of the screen the same amount of ram is displayed

408310 2005-11-28 06:40:00 *forgot
and i guess microsoft will not grant me anymore WPA? this will be the 3 time to activate on the same machine (funny all times involved ram issues)

408311 2005-11-28 07:15:00 Download and run memtest on your ram - and you can install Windows however many times you like. MS only cares that it is legit. pctek (84)

Only on the same computer..... WPA detects a new computer/major hardware changes
