408078 2005-11-27 21:34:00 Im sure this is just a settings issue, but I'm not sure where to look change it...

When drag'in droppin files from desktop to Windows explorer (My Documents, etc), it used to transfer original file(s) to the new location. Now it copies it to new location leaving original (unwanted) file still on desktop. How do I go about changing settings to the way they used to be?

Any input appreciated kind sirs and siress's.

408079 2005-11-27 21:48:00 It only copies files when you move files from a window to a Different window , for example: from 'My Documents' to 'My Computer'. But if I open 2 'My documents' for example and drag n drop a file from my documents to another folder in My documents, it just moves the file and doesnt copy.

Thats my understanding of dragndrop.

408080 2005-11-27 22:20:00 Isn't the rule "Move if the source and destination are on the same disk, otherwise copy?" It may be a bit more complex than that, but I think that's roughly it. If it is a .exe, the default is to create a shortcut at the destination.

I.e. from C: to C: (or subfolders) would be a move, from C: to D: would be a copy.

You can override it by holding down CTRL to force a copy, or SHIFT to force a move.

I don't think going from window to window is relevant.

408081 2005-11-27 22:28:00 Of course you can right-click to drag, then select Move instead of Copy. Greg (193)
408082 2005-11-27 22:30:00 Tony, I have my lone 200GB HD in 4 partitions, with windows on C:drive, with the other 3 partitions made up of different files and documents.

When copying a file to a position within the same partition, it should transfer the file to new location by default?

And when copying to a different partition, it should copy by default?

(by "copying" in this both cases I mean drag-and-drop)

408083 2005-11-27 23:05:00 Yes, Windows will transfer files within a partition but I experience the same effect as yourself when transferring from the Desktop to Explorer. That is, the file is copied. There may be a registry setting to change this but I don't know of one.

To get around it I just hold down Shift while dragging which causes the file to be moved rather than copied when transferring from Desktop to Explorer or from partition to partition.

408085 2005-11-27 23:45:00 Roger 10-4 on the .exe files Tony.

From know on I'll just need to hold down shift to force move the files, and ctrl for copy.

Thanks peoples
