408019 2005-11-27 07:22:00 Help please!
I wanted to connect up my old laptop to my new laptop to transfer all my files through the network plugs with a crossover cable. At first this didn't work so I changed the name of my old computer as they have the same name. Didn't work either. Someone suggested that this was because they are setup with a domain name and they should be setup with a workgroup name instead. This was done and now I can't log on either computer using my normal logon name and password. A logon message appears when I try to logon to Windows after boot up, saying to make sure my user name and password is correct which I know they are. How can I remedy this situation. OSs are Win2k pro on my old computer and WinXP pro on the new one.
Any urgent help would be apreciated, even if you ring or text me and I can ring you back.
Ph number is [edit]
Thanks,
Tony.

408020 2005-11-27 09:31:00 When you remove a computer from a domain (which it sounds like you have done) you effectively disable the domain accounts which would have been the accounts you were using to logon. You now need a local account to logon to the computers.

You should have an administrator account with which to logon to the computers, the username is usually administrator and often the password is blank.

You wont be able to add these computers back to the domain until you are connected to your domain controller. Are these work computers that you have at home? If so you'll have to wait to you have them connected back at work to fix them.

Anyway, hope this helps

408021 2005-11-27 09:32:00 Have you tried loggin in using SAFE MODE. This circumvents the network settings so you should have no problems with that.

408022 2005-11-28 03:03:00 Thanks for your replies, Yes these are work computers. I am about to go into the office to try to connect them, but I don't think that I will be able to untill I can change them back to a domain from the workgroup setting. I have tried using administrator as a user name, and also tried booting up in safe mode to no avail. I'll keep you posted on what happens when I plug in to the network. chopperman (7158)
408023 2005-11-28 04:07:00 Go and have a chat with your Domain Administrator. You may find the files you want are already on the domain network via roaming profile or folder redirection. Unless you have permission to add computers to the domain then you will have to talk to the domain admin to do this anyway and they will be able to sort out your issue of file transfer very easily. berryb (99)
408024 2005-11-28 05:47:00 Just a little O/T issue here:

Try not to include personal contact details within your posts.

It's probably not a good idea.

408025 2005-12-01 05:01:00 Thanks everyone...point taken about the phone number, can't remove it now, or can I?

My problem has been resolved - the local network administrator signed on and the I.T. dpt in head office reconfigured it by remote connection.

I did not realise that the administrator logon is at a higher level than my logon which has so called administrator rights. The administrator logon had a secure password loaded against it that only the privilaged few in the I.T. dpt know.

Thanks.
