408408 2005-11-28 19:29:00 How much stuff do you want to back up, in Gb's? There may be an easier way.
To be honest Rob,I just wanted to use the dvd facilty,as I have only used the cd part of unit.
Thanks for other info,I am surprised there is only Nero.

408409 2005-11-28 19:44:00 I am surprised there is only Nero.

Why the surprise? Nero is bundled at low cost with almost every drive sold. There isn't much money around for any other commercial burning software.

There are backup and drive imaging programs like Acronis but if your system needs backing up now you should get started with the software that came with the drive.

My pioneer unit didn't come with any software, not sure why.

408411 2005-11-28 19:52:00 For making dvd's/ vcd's i use Ulead DVD Movie factory. Very easy to use.

For backing up i use Nero Ultra.

That could account for it not being here.

408414 2005-11-28 23:34:00 ...Or you could try the Free version of DeepBurner. This should be adequate for backups - I use it for writing backup CDs since the Nero Express that came with my CD-RW drive keeps crashing. It also burns audio CDs and can handle DVDs as well. You can download it from www.deepburner.com (http://www.deepburner.com)

The Pro version just has a few extra features to make things a little bit easier, though you can still backup files by copying them.

408416 2005-11-29 02:32:00 What do you mean by the best? Best in terms of features, or usability, what? If it's usability, then go for Nero. If you want the best overall, I'd say Linux. Albert (482)

I use Nero for making CDs and DVDs and copying rather than backup.
A backup is or was a compilation of several files or folders and compressed on several removable backup media. This means you use an application to do the backup and then save this resultant file to another hard drive or other media like floppy disks, CDs or DVDs. This depends on file size etc.

You can use PKZip which will span several disks.

Your difficultly may come from the application you use. If you use something like the backup contained in WinXP Pro then you will find that not all files are backed up as it were. Any files "in use" will be skipped. This means that you will need to reinstall the application that you used to do the backup plus of course the operating system.

I use two 200 Gig hard drives and Ghost 1 to the other. 1 200 gig hard drive is removable and I do this every now and then. Usually once a month or 6 weeks.

Any photos I have taken get copied to CDs or DVDs and a logical drive as well. Have to say as well as any documents I created.
