407913 2005-11-26 08:03:00 Most complete and easy to use distro is Ubuntu 5.10
Second best is Xandros - is actually the easiest of them all, but the free version has some limitations, like 4x CD writing.

407914 2005-11-26 08:16:00 Knoppix.. run the live CD first... give you a chance to see if you like it before you install
Other live CDs include Mepis, another (I have heard) good distro.. sorry no actual knowledge of Mepis

407915 2005-11-26 08:17:00 Knoppix runs straight off the CD so theres no need to worry about formatiing the HDD. Just dont try to write to a NTFS partition using Linux :angry

Ha ha very funny

407920 2005-11-26 11:36:00 Which would be the best version of Linux to install (bootable) and cut my teeth on ?
Mepis would be my choice.

407921 2005-11-26 21:36:00 This question has to be rather common (FAQ Jen  )

It is reasonable to expect that you cannot go MS cold turkey so a dual boot is probably the best option . As to the best Linux distro for your requirements, thats for you to decide; we can but quide you .

Certainly the live cd's are great to play with but I prefer a "real" Linux distro (only joking off course :) )

As mentioned before Xandros is a very good distro and if you buy the better version (can't remember its branding), you get Crossover Office which allows you to run certain Windows applications . To me it has the best File Manager of any Linux distro but a file manager is only one part of the whole package .

I like SuSE which is very professional looking . It includes a YaST tool which is sort of a Control Panel .

But certainly review some of the live cd's: knoppix, Simply Mepis . There is a live version of SuSE but unusually for a Live CD it asks you a number of questions before you can run it .

Enjoy!
