| 408045 | 2005-11-27 07:30:00 | I did a clean install of mandriva after wiping the hd, all was well until the reboot. The display is very bright green with yellow text. I tried to change the video card configuration & the monitor selection & it made no difference. When booting up the display shows up normal. It's all ok with other os's Any ideas? P4 2.4, Asus P4S8X-X mb, Gigabyte Radeon 9600 Video, 768 Ram |

Can you post the contents of your xorg.conf file. Look under /etc/X11/ for it. Also if you could post the make/model of your monitor and the resolution you normally run it at as well. |

| 408048 | 2005-11-27 07:57:00 | Here's the Xconf file, My display has changed to a white background with lime green text & doesn't boot into gui, I have to startx. The monitor is an old Mag 996pf running at 1024x768 # File generated by XFdrake. # ************************************************** ******************** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ************************************************** ******************** Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. | 408049 | 2005-11-27 07:58:00 | Radeon cards used to be hell to get working in linux. Has that changed? I bought Nvidia back in the day when I first bought this computer because of linux issues. | Greven (91) | ||
| 408050 | 2005-11-27 08:06:00 | I can't see anything obviously wrong with your xorg.conf and it has detected the monitor correctly with the frequencies etc. If it worked fine before with Mandriva, then it suggests your installation was not 100% successful. I wouldn't bother mucking around too much at this stage and try a fresh installation and see how that goes. | Jen (38) | ||
| 408051 | 2005-11-27 08:13:00 | I did that earlier on, thats why I wiped the hd. I just found by changing the colour from 24 to 16 bit has worked. I was also looking at the ATi site & it could be a driver issue. When trying to change the looknfeel of kde & logging off, the text said I had Radeon kernel version 1.16 but version 1.17 or newer is needed, I'll give it a go & let you know what happens | Phil B (648) | ||
| 408052 | 2005-11-28 09:53:00 | Yes it is a driver problem, the only problem is when you go through the configuration process you get asked all sorts of highly technical questions, some of which you just guess cos I cant be bothered to read through reams of readme. It changed my resolution to something miniscule, I changed it back to 1024x768 where I like it & X spat the dummy & no more gui. The mouse cursor was still pale green & there was nothing you could do about it. Even installing another theme they were all green. No wonder linux cant get a foothold in the desktop market. Mandriva 2005le was visually good but a pain to get my hardware to work with it, 2006 the hardware works good (aside from the display fiasco) but I cant see it. Basically I'm looking for a windows replacement. I want to run some windows software on it but only because you cant get a linux version. I got some of it running with wine, but not reliably. Anyone got any suggestions. I want ease of use, ie windows, but without being fleeced for it & also I don't want the NASA computer system in my house just to run vista when its released. I'm not really frustrated aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

One option seeing as you live in Auckland, is to bring your existing Mandriva installation along to the installfest being held this Saturday (3rd) and have someone take a hands-on look at it and get some sense beaten into it, or perhaps to have a different distro installed. - AuckLUG Installfest (installfest.linux.net.nz) What are the window programs you are trying to run under Wine? |
