2005-11-26 03:02:00 | Hi I am trying to install AVG antivirus 7.1 on a laptop, compaq presario, windows xp sp2. The problem is that we once had AVG installed and it must not have been uninstalled properly, because when I go to install the program again, it says it is already installed. I went around deleted anything "avg". I also looked in the registry and deleted some AVG entries, but couldn't delete some others. Any ideas? Thanks

2005-11-26 03:57:00 | tried deleting the files in safe mode? | maverickoc (7240) | |
2005-11-26 04:10:00 | Yeah it still doesn't work. It says Error deleting key. | music_man (5482) | |
2005-11-26 04:23:00 | i pinched this off aanother forum It was actually a problem with the autoexec.nt file,,not the avg per se. I had to make a copy of the file from window\repair and put it into the system32 folder,,,then the program uninstalled as it should.

2005-11-26 04:23:00 | I assume you deleted all entries from startup? (Start .. run .. type msconfig.. select startup tab.. any AVG entries still ticked in there?)

2005-11-26 04:24:00 | it also said to downlaod the version you were using and re-install it again | maverickoc (7240) | |
2005-11-26 04:26:00 | Yeah, but then booting into safe mode would stop avg starting up, wouldn't it | maverickoc (7240) | |
2005-11-28 00:42:00 | I cannot find the install file for the early version. AVG has not been installed for ages - we had another anti-virus program Antivir but Windows xp didn't recognise it very well so I thought I had better use AVG. I don't get the "autoexec.nt" thing sorry. Could you please explain? Also, are there any other free anti-virus programs out there that are good?

2005-11-28 01:44:00 | Following some of the advice on this forum, I recently switched from free AVG to free Avast!. It seems to be working well, though early days yet. Try the forum's Search, as there have been recent threads on just that topic.
