408604 2005-11-29 09:49:00 Hi,

For some reason, I can't access the web manager for the settings of my RTA770 ADSL Router/Modem. The configuration page is accessed at 192.168.1.2, but when I type in the default user name and password, it won't accept it. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't changed either of them. Anyone know what is going on, and how I can fix it?

Cheers

408605 2005-11-29 10:35:00 Factory reset it. Read the manual, specific instruction for that router will be in there. You'll have to re-enter all your settings. Murray P (44)

Thanks Murray. The following from the manual explains how to reset the router:

Reset Router
To make effect the settings that you set for
this router, please open the Reset Router
web page and click the Reboot button to
invoke all settings.

Not much help, really, as the web page with the reboot button is inside the configuration pages that I can't access.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

408607 2005-11-29 18:30:00 There will be a manual reset button on the modem, I have a RTA220 and it has a hole on the back that you press a nail or similar into to manually reset the modem to default. KiwiBJ (9080)

Is it my understanding that outsiders can scan ports and login to other people's routers that still have the default username and password then have fun playing around on that computer. I believe they are also able to change the default username and password so if this is the case that may be what has happened to you.

Can anyone confirm whether that is true or not? The computer's firewall wouldn't be much help in preventing that would it?

By default, I don't think most routers would have that remote access option turned on .

Once you gain access to that router as admin, you can do what you like with the settings . A computers firewall will do nothing as the remote snooper only goes as far as the router, therefore will not be detected .

As KiwiBJ has said, its normally a matchsitck/nail/paperclip sized hole at the back of the router whith a little switch in there .

BTW Kiwi, what does BJ signify, or would you rather not say

408612 2005-11-30 05:49:00 I've just downloaded your RTA770 manual and the rear panel view shows the reset hole. It is a small hole to the left of the power connector. Get a paperclip and poke it firmly into the hole for about 10 secs and then release it.

Are you sure your router's IP is 192.168.1.2 because the manual states the default gateway is 192.168.1.1.
