408965 2005-11-29 09:43:00 I have just installed the CD version on my new Windows XP SP2 PC

Although I can access the internet with the program enabled it will not access any web pages not even with the firewall component disabled.

Disabling NIS 2005 (except for the antivirus) solves the problem.
Have spend 2 weeks trying ways to fix it including using the norton automated assistant but the problem remains

Should I just ditch it and try something else?

Thanks

408966 2005-11-29 11:15:00 Yep, and ditch the antivirus too, it's crap.

Personally, I like NOD32 antivirus. Grab a firewall like Kerio Personal, Zone Alarm or, if you can still find it, Sygate.

One persons crap is another persons gold. I get really annoyed by people just jumping in and saying something is crap or useless and to instead use their favourite program when the person was simply asking for help. Their are numerous people on here who don't like Symantec stuff regardless of what it is and are always saying so. Try to keep your personal preferences aside and answer the questions instead.

I too had trouble with NIS2005 but I simply unstalled it and installed it again. One other problem is setup and maybe you have turned something on you should not have.

Oh and by the way no virus has ever got past NAV on my machine that has not been spotted as the program was downloaded. Also all attacks are repelled with ease with NIS.

Now I am not going to say it is the best because what is best for me is not best for someone else. Go with what you like but please don't put other stuff down all the time.

408968 2005-11-29 13:55:00 Technically speaking;
NOD32 is like jumping into Alonso's F1 Renault or Kimi Räikkönen's F1 McLaren, its light, super fast and the best in the world.

Norton is like jumping into a great big pile of steaming poo.

This is what I have learnt from experience, so unless you are a dung beetle (www.ces.ncsu.edu) get rid of Norton.

The person has asked whther or not he should ditch it.
We have a lot of experience with Nortons and that is why it gets the negative comments - it IS rubbish.
I agree - NOD32, Zone ALarm Pro and RegDefend I the top 3 have found to be the best so far.

I've seen so many problems with Nortons and as he has discovered their help is not much use.

408970 2005-11-29 19:48:00 I too would stay away from NAV or NIS.
Had so many PC's come into the workshop with problems caused by NAV or NIS.
Trying to uninstall them can be real pain in the b... as well.

Thanks for your help
Problem was fixed after I uninstalled NIS 2005 deleted all related folders and reinstalled it.
I think the conflict arose with my preinstalled limited period version that came with my PC.
Nortons probably needs to look at improving their support documentation.

408973 2005-12-02 02:53:00 The problem with Norton A/V & NIS is that it takes over the windows shell, which is used for almost all programs running within windows.
The corporate version is much better and we use the software for our WAN. However that said and done, I would never use the personal versions.

Glad everything worked out! Norton is so heavily pushed and on so many new machines, their problems should be stickies on help forums, cos you wont get much help from them. Yes you probably fixed the problem cos NIS bauks with those preinstalled programs, you need to make sure you get everything out manually - SymNRT, Nortons tool does not help here. Hopefully you'll have no more problems, but if your setup is wrong you'll have run away usage from the cc programs(ccapp, ccproxy etc, etc.) and thats just one of the many issues. Hopefully you'll get away with only having to re-install the program halp a dozen times. Then again you might be one of the lucky ones and NIS works for you just fine. -Sincerly- Dave
