| 408451 | 2005-11-29 01:21:00 | Hi i am currently new whith the whole broadband thing, i have a woosh connection capible of 500kbs, currently on average runs at between 350kbs - 400kbs (signal variation) but can only download at not even a tenth of that speed. i have use many applications such as many shareware and bittorrents but they all seem to be the same, They each file will only run up to about 20kbs - 25kbs, i can also run muitiple downloads at the same time roughly doing the same speed, what i really want tough is for a singledownload to be running the same speed as mulitiple downloads,( i one had it running 8 downloads with a sped of 120kbs on bit comet as well as about 40kbs on a shareware program) how do i do this. PLEASE HELP |

I am on a 1mb connection which with a good connection etc D/L at 120KBS but I useually get between 50 to 80KBS sonetimes as low as 33KBS. Trevor :) |

| 408453 | 2005-11-29 01:35:00 | you may be getting confused between bits and bytes......for example I have a 2mb(mb) connection that's 2megaBITS(mB).........that means that at best i can download at 250kiloBYTES..........there is 8 bits in one byte.....your 500kb connection should download one file, assuming you are not doin much else on the web, at a maximum speed of 60kB | drcspy (146) | ||

| 408458 | 2005-11-29 02:33:00 | well a lot depends on whom you are downloading from ........dunno if you are aware of this but say you login to some site .......ah ....download.com for arguements sake.......you are going 'through' a number of other servers etc on the way to getting there.......well as you may know you dont actually 'go there' the webpage is downloaded to you.....as is any files you choose to download.......each puter/server your request/download is routed through can be a bottleneck........try this site here; www.jetstreamgames.co.nz it will give you a good indication of your actual speed by downloading a 500kb file and timing the download for you..........i'm pretty sure that it works for other isp connections not just jetstream.........anyway while I was typeing this up I did a 'tracert' on www.download.com and found that i had to go thru 13 puters to get there....see this picture: 202.21.128.20 as you can see some of the 'response' times are slower than others....and theres your bottleneck........try that jetstream games site for a fairly accurate reading on yoru speed it's located in nz so theres fewer pc's to go thru to get there thus its a fairly accurate measurement........ |
