408856 2005-12-01 04:24:00 All just fluff without proof, which im sure will come about from feedback to PCworld from the buying public, either by direct contact.....or falling sales...or consistent sales, whatever the case maybe.

I know a number of people that buy the mag (and throw back at me whatever they read like they have suddenly become experts  ) who dont own cutting edge comps, and certainly wouldn't be investing money in upgrading their rigs, for the mag disc or any other reason.

408857 2005-12-01 04:35:00 meh the dvd doesnt worry me, most overseas mags have it too. now you can fit more stuff on your cover disks, maybe a linux distro and a monthly coloum about it/how to use it or something? Prescott (11)
408858 2005-12-01 04:36:00 PCW dosn't have to cater to the majority of computer users . . It has to cater to the majority of it's readership . These are not people who see computers as "just for email" . They are either people who are interested in the latest gadgets/software/high tech info or people who like to tweak/fiddle with their PCs . That is *why* most of them buy the publication .
That is exactly what I was going to say . It is mainly the fiddlers and tweakers and those who do more than browse the internet, check their emails and install a couple of games (using their CD drive ;)) who are interested in the magazine and/or CD .

Ironically, those fiddlers and tweakers know that the apps on the CD are often out of date by the time the mag gets to the bookshelves so they don't bother installing off the CD, they go and download the latest version from the internet .

So if the "average Joe Hunt" and the fiddlers and tweakers don't use the CD, then who does?!
Maybe we ought to have a poll on who finds the CD to be of any use .

Once upon a time, prior to getting dialup internet, the CD was often the main reason I bought PC World . It was still worth having after getting dialup until I got unlimited internet access, then the CDs only became useful when they contained BIG files/Windows updates that were too much to download . These days . . . well, Bruce won't want to know about that . ;)

408861 2005-12-01 05:55:00 who dont own cutting edge comps, and certainly wouldn't be investing money in upgrading their rigs, for the mag disc or any other reason.DVD drives aren't exactly cutting edge. Manufacturers have been using them for 5+ years in computers in all price ranges. It might me a fair argument if you were talking about double layer DVD disks as only computers sold in the last year or so have drives that can read them, but we are talking about DVD's here - old technology. :2cents: maccrazy (6741)
408862 2005-12-01 06:20:00 Its only in the last year that DVD-writers have come down in price to be included in a run of the mill computer (talking new here), and I would still hazard a guess and say most new comps ship without them, presuming that most new comps are underspeced and sold to budget minded home owners and companies for office work.

Again going back to the shop floor, when I spec up a machine and ask about DVD drives the majority of the time the customer asks me why they would want one....

Futhermore, I am yet to come across a DVD drive that cant read a dual layer disc, certainly all that I have tried worked just fine, especially as about the only media you can get on DVD are movies....which tend to be on DL media, and untill recently that was about all a DVD drive of any vintage was usefull for....

408863 2005-12-01 07:49:00 brilliant, this will save me the download. apparently there are many bug fixes in this new version of knoppix.... Prescott (11)
408864 2005-12-01 07:51:00 omg, I got sick of reading this on page 6.

Tux is right, DVD drives can be bought for as little as $65 these days, it's a good move that PCworld has made to DVD drives.

I personally have 2, one in each computer (got my first one 2 years ago). They can read and write DVD's which is great, and they can burn/read CD's at a full 52x, and these days that costs $10 more than a CD drive? wow, i'm sure that it's going to take all the whiners 3 years to save up $10 more!

Melta says that "1 in 20 computers in my shop have DVD drives" well I'm going to assume he works at "Retro computers 'R us" , so how many 486's have you got in there melta? Have you sold any P3's lately? You can get a $1000 computer from Dell which comes with atleast a DVD rom, and the warehouse sells them for $900 with a DVD drive...those are some of the cheapest 1st hand computers around and they have DVD roms

Melta says in a later post "Assuming most computer sold are underpriced etc..." (1st paragraph of his latest post). Well Melta, most people who buy a computer that is underpriced probally wouldn't buy PCworld, and therefore wouldn't care if it even came on a CD rather than a floppy. That's a weak arguement you are using there.

The point is, stop complaining about progress! I'm guessing you all protested when they decided to produce cars on a production line instead of by hand, or you complained when they decided to use jets instead of propeller driven planes?

408865 2005-12-01 08:08:00 1. On second thoughts i will remove the insult....
2. The computers come in for repair and give a far better indication of what people are using then some pos in the warehouse.
3. Im not saying im right or wrong on whether the decsion to drop CD's is a good one, I have no more idea how it will impact sales then you or anyone else. The only indication that will matter is the results of the 3 month trial. My views are expressed purely because I enjoy the debate, and as in all debates people will express different points of view...
3. learn how to quote, its not hard.
4. I like cheese.
