408847 2005-12-01 02:17:00 But.....everyone can read a CD, Only people that own DVD drives can read a DVD. Why do it even if it only cut out 5 percent of your market?, let along cutting out 60 percent or more.

Doesn't that retard "progress"? You hold everyone else back because some people don't upgrade? If that's the case then wht can't I run it on my old 386 in DOS?

Thats just silly, there are very few 486's still being used, while there are thousands upon thousands of systems with no dvd drives. i would even say the vast majoroity of computers in NZ don't have a dvd drive, yet can still make use of the content on the cover disc.

I fail to see how a CD could possibly hold anyone back, its not forcing them to use older gear, The DVD drive does it all.

Agree with Metla here.
Some of the more vocal forum members here are completely out of touch with what the average home user is using a computer for - email and occasional web browsing. They have no need for a DVD drive and upgrading is not even on their mind.
Next time they buy a new computer they will have one but that may be a year or two away yet and PC World should at this time cater for the majority and supply a CD that everyone can use.

408850 2005-12-01 03:32:00 Did not mean to hijack this thread, so back to the topic....

Congrats to PCW for the DVD. As BB says, plans are for only 3 DVDs so it is not like those stuck in a CD mindset will be totally excluded, and it may serve as a push for them to take a step into the 21st century.

yea there on trial for 3 issues and if it goes well they will probabaly continue giving DVDs. lets hope the next one actually works :(

408851 2005-12-01 03:51:00 how about having the contents of the dvd's online and people can download the programs they want? subscribers could get a password to access the site. netchicken (4843)
408852 2005-12-01 04:01:00 And this was from the demo on our DVD? That was sent to me via the local distrib - on a CD, nicely packaged and all.

PCW dosn't have to cater to the majority of computer users.. It has to cater to the majority of it's readership. These are not people who see computers as "just for email". They are either people who are interested in the latest gadgets/software/high tech info or people who like to tweak/fiddle with their PCs. That is *why* most of them buy the publication.

PCW should be aiming for the LCD (www.urbandictionary.com) of it's readership, not the LCD of the computer users in New Zealand as a whole.

408855 2005-12-01 04:20:00 Some of the more vocal forum members here are completely out of touch with what the average home user is using a computer for - email and occasional web browsing . They have no need for a DVD drive and upgrading is not even on their mind .

Am I the only person who sees a logical inconsistency here that a blind man could drive a truck through?? :groan:

If the average home user is using a computer just for email and occasional web browsing, they won't be interested in what's on the flaming CD, DVD or 78rpm record for that matter .

Following Safari's logic, they won't even use a CD ROM, except perhaps to play some music, and as sure as hell they won't give a toss what sort of disc is on the cover of PCW, if they even know what PCW is to start with .

PCW is a magazine for people who have at least some interest in their computer beyond "email and occasional web browsing" so let's get real here . So much hysteria about an honest attempt to offer an increased benefit to PCW readers is utterly amazing, the "anti" response borders on the hysterical, and if I were in Bruce's shoes I'd just wave the luddite minority goodbye and be happy with the new subscribers that the DVD will attract .

I buy the magazine for the content, and the cover disc is simply a bonus . Personally, I am grateful for the upgrade of the cover disc and will update my computer with a DVD drive before their twilight technology disappears into the moonlight .

Anybody got some spare lives? There's a few people out there in PF1-Land who could do with an upgrade .

Cheers
