408836 2005-11-30 22:37:00 Someone suggested having both a CD and DVD included, so people could compare. I'm surprised no-one mentioned the overseas magazines that had a CD version and a DVD version. This is far from a perfect solution, but it would satisfy a number of people's concerns, and PCW could monitor various sales of both versions and make a business decison based on sales figures rather than surveys or speculation.

I'm afraid this is not economically possible - not witout putting the price of the mag up even more.

Also, most of the Aussie mags that did this have ceased - and now have gone all DVD. Sometimes, you just have to move with the times.

408837 2005-11-30 22:39:00 The worst thing about this is im now planning on getting the mag after hearing the DVD has the fear demo it, which i couldn't bothered downloading...... Metla (12)
408838 2005-11-30 22:50:00 But which PCtek has since pointed out contains Securom copy protection - sorry, missed that one. And what with the quirky - you-better-not-have-any-usb-devices-attached - King Kong demo, my strike rate is looking pretty bad .... Biggles (121)
408839 2005-11-30 22:53:00 Thats alright, I was thinking of forwarding the bill for removing Securom to PCWorld secret headquarters anyhow. Metla (12)

You've missed the point. The GAME has Securom protection on it. The DEMO has malware. Its not part of the protection, I had a long email conversation with the game company about it.
Feel free to install it - then have fun trying to remove the nasty "extras".

408841 2005-12-01 00:16:00 I'm curious about this now (particularly as I used up the remainder of my data cap for the last period downloading the F.E.A.R demo) about what the malware F.E.A.R demo installs actually means. People are saying they can't remove it, but (though I'm not saying I "like" malware) what actual harm is it causing - reboots, lost data, trojans, etc???

...provided you use them for toll-calling. Otherwise, tack on another $10 to that $29.95 charge - $40 for 500mb of data, seems a bit steep. Even if it is fast, that only means you get through your cap that much faster, IMHO

But to clarify - the malware files that you can't remove - are they part of Securom or something different?

408844 2005-12-01 01:29:00 To clarify:
I have no idea. First they denied it. The second time they said it wasn't doing any harm. Probably wasn't, I didn't leave it there long enough to find out.
Possibly a bit like the rootkit - in itself maybe not but who wants stuff like that on there anyway?

It had:
Registry entry
System32 entries
Doc&Settings/username/application data entries.
There was nothing to say it would be installed. It hides iteslf.
It won't allow itself to be removed. Not with any of my tools that I had.

I got it off my sons PC in the end via DOS.
I got it off mine by reghosting it.

And they said thridly it wouldn't be in the game and had nothing to do with them. (WHo then??)
And it wasn't in the game, although the game did have Securom 7, so god knows. I don't have the programming skills to poke about to see what it might be for...so I just killed it off.
And then bought RegDefend.
It was a friend of mine (with some programming skills) who found it in the first place.

408845 2005-12-01 01:45:00 And this was from the demo on our DVD? That was sent to me via the local distrib - on a CD, nicely packaged and all. Biggles (121)
