2005-11-30 12:10:00 | my god some people on here are bloody stingy. (considering a SAMSUNG BRANDED DVD WRITER is $65 and a samsung branded cd writer is all of a $10 difference) you dont have to be a millionaire to purchase a dvd writer, they arent $400 + like they used to be. Oh, and i think youll find that the media i bought for $10 for a 25 pack was actually LASER brand, and last time i looked it wasnt all that bad. Heck, i bought a dvd writer a year ago. and im a student for godsakes. | Tux (606) | |
2005-11-30 12:18:00 | Throw in both a dvd and cd for say a couple of mags so people can see all the good stuff thats on the dvd that could not fit on the cd. That will make them upgrade,if not after the trial period just go dvd anyway as most other computer mags have and I check out the dvd/cd contents page in the computer mags as I have 56k modem it saves me from downloading patches for my games and downloading good programes as well. I have sometimes bought other computer mags as they had on their dvds what patches and programes I wanted which is very handy for someone on a 56k modem. And as for mags that are all sealed up so I cant find out whats on the dvd/cd I just dont bother with, hay I am trying to save myself from having to do a 15 hr download for a patch update on a game etc. :)

2005-11-30 17:40:00 | one word, broadband. its fast, and its cheap Cheap? The lowest priced broadband costs amount to about $360 more a year than dialup, but from what I hear these low priced broadband packages suffer from crappo data caps and up/down speeds.

2005-11-30 18:09:00 | It seems like a pretty sound business decision to me . By putting out free DVD then they may attract more business . Yes they may lose some but if point of difference is free DVD vs free CD then it might work . Looking forward all new comps I have seen all have DVD drive so to me it makes sense to accentuate their mag with that type of advertising as it is becoming more common for people to recognise what they have is a dvd drive (because it was part of the purchasing discussion it becomes part of customers vocabulary) . Personally I used to buy the mag for the artcles (or was that penthouse ;) ) - the cd was normally given away to those wanting free software .

As BB says, plans are for only 3 DVDs so it is not like those stuck in a CD mindset will be totally excluded, and it may serve as a push for them to take a step into the 21st century. |

2005-11-30 20:45:00 | I'd like to my protest against the change from CD to the PC World DVD. I dont have a DVD reader in my computer. So now I'm considering whether to renew my subscription, if a major part of why I buy the PC World is cut off from me. I Hope it goes back to CD, as 7 times nothing equals nothing for me, and I suspect many others. I heartily agree with the quoted thoughts and will not be renewing if the is not provision made for a cover CD

2005-11-30 22:16:00 | Someone suggested having both a CD and DVD included, so people could compare. I'm surprised no-one mentioned the overseas magazines that had a CD version and a DVD version. This is far from a perfect solution, but it would satisfy a number of people's concerns, and PCW could monitor various sales of both versions and make a business decison based on sales figures rather than surveys or speculation. Personally, I've rarely bought PCW as the CD didn't seem worth the cost. A DVD packed with demos and free software might be more tempting (particularly now I have a new DVD writer that reads the - sometimes marginal - coverdiscs my old reader never did.) Lizard
